I own a Pentium 3 equilavent (AMD Athalon) Windows Millennium Edition PC. Whenever I try to boot it. I get the a message that says, "The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD. Type the name of the Windows Loader. (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD) SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!! I am not able to boot in safe mode, or run setup. I try to run a registry checker, but when I type in, ..."scanreg.exe", it says that that file is also missing or corrupted. AHH!!!! Please help me someone.

Do you have a Umax scanner?
Only a wild guess, if you do go here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q191874.
Or maybe here:
http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ervmm32.htm
was worth a try

Virtual Machine, vmm32.vxd, sorry, have to recover, you might have got a virus, that wiped your drive, vmm32.vxd is an OS driver, there should be no way that file should be missing or corrupt, no programs modify that file, its a read only file,

this file has to do with your network. Did you have a network or recentlt tried to setup your network? Try going into safe and finish loading your network.

I have the same problem. But the reload doesnt fix it. I havent had a network and I dont have that scanner, I have no idea what happened to get this. I rang up the PC company and they say i need a fix disk there sending me that should open up the protected operating system space on the hard drive and fix it with the reload cd. The reload cd apparently cant fix the stuff in the extra protected space. the fix disk opens up the space for the cd. Iv been waiting ages 4 this disk it still aint here :(

my customers had the same problem on a pIII. a friend told me to check first sdram with s special tool called ctram51 at http://www.heise.de/ct

but i think its a network/or/and scanner problem. i think if the system had been clean before loading the network/modem(ours is adsl/telephone-line)the problems would not have been occurred. i use norton system works regularly on my p166mmx/has internet and burner), i have deleted outlook having installed netscape navigator/messenger for emails, i never ever(since jan.6) had a virus alarm or anythin like that.
my friend told me to boot from save mode, remove hardware(whatever that means) delete the vxd-files from the system32folder, if not possible do this from dos. after that reinstall winme over the old one to repair the files. maybe some device drivers need to be reinstalled.
we will replace the scanner temporarly.

Same problem here, folks. The only difference is that I apparently have no access to the C drive, in that the prompt I'm offered is C> but not C:\>. If I enter, for example, DIR, the message replays, "The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD. Type the name of the Windows Loader. (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD"

What a mess. Is this the work of a virus, or just a hardware breakdown?

I've been getting this right after a clean install on a presario 2266, windows 98 and me. When my drivesr are all getting set up after the install my computer goes into a windows protection error, with a misssing vmm32.vxd. I am going to try taking all peripherals out of the picture and possibly even taking one of my memory modules out and turning off the external cache. I think most of the time for this error, it's just trial and error that fixes it. If I succeed in loading windows, then I will one by one put the hardware/options back in place until I find the error.
