On startup, my husband gets the message "cannot find system.ini. Boot with Emergency Boot Disk and type scanreg/restore." This works fine, till the next boot, when he gets the same message. I see that others have had a similar problem, but the restore tool seems to have fixed theirs. This started after he defragged, which may or may not be significant. Any ideas on what is happening?

Hi Janet.
See if you have the System.ini file.Do a search for System.ini.
System.ini should be in the C:\Windows folder.
If it is there, then check the following.
Start
Run - type msconfig
OK
If you use Normal Startup -
choose - System.ini tabMake sure everthing is checkmarked.
Also open the plus sign next to each item and make sure everything there is checkmarked.
If you use - Selective Startup -
Make sure there is a checkmark next to - Process System.ini file
choose - System.ini tabMake sure everthing is checkmarked.
Also open the plus sign next to each item and make sure everything there is checkmarked.
Reboot
Take care,Linda

Try replacing the system.ini file for one on the Windows CD. Just rename the old one to system.old and then copy the one from the CD to the correct location (c:windows most likely).

I admit that I made a mistake to delete a file from "windows" folder with many other files that flooded into the folder from web site or email...
So, I've same problem as first message. The screen shows the message "cannot find system.ini. Boot with Emergency Boot Disk and type scanreg/restore." then freezed up...
But, my problem is, though I've used Win ME startup disk and emergency disk, it either goes to freeze again (in Safe mode, but can be ctrl+alt+delete and shut down) or again shows the same message as above. Can any one explain what's going on? How can I restore it to the original state?
Thanks alot!!

I've been having the exact same problem as Roger. Mine started after I installed my new hard drive. I think that the instalation disk tried to move the file, because my Hard drive is listed as drive E, but the comp is still looking for it in drive C. Anybody have any ideas?
