after a really easy re-install of Win ME, after re-installing all my apps, and all my files, and re-downloading virus and firewall software, and with the computer running really well, I discover I have no resource meter and the screensaver I want is not installed. I tried to install through Add/Remove software|Windows setup and was told I was missing files: for screen saver, file bezier.scr; for the resouce meter and system monitor, file sysmon.cnt. This is with the Win ME in the CD drive and selected trying to run the install. Any ideas? Can I re-install Win ME over top of the existing installation and do a custom install?

If the screensaver you're referring to is a standard ME issue, go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, then to Windows Setup. Under "Desktop Themes" enable "Desktop Themes Support" and then choose the screensaver you want from the list.
Similarly, you'll find "System Monitor" and "Resource Meter" in Windows Setup listed under "System Tools". Bear in mind though that running "System Monitor" and "Resource Meter" takes up System Resources :-)
