Please help!!
On trying to solve a different problem with my PC, I very stupidly moved the VMM32.VXD file to a different location. When I start up now I get the following message:

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd
Type the name of the windows loader (e.g., C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd)
C>

I have tried to load in safe mode, but this doesn't work.
I have searched these forums and tried a number of suggestions made to people with similar problems, what ever I try I can't correct my error!!!!!

I don't want to reinstall windows unless absolutely necessary, as like everyone else, I don't want to loose any of my data.

Is there a way of moving the file to where it was originally?
Can I use dos to move it back?

Please Please Please Help me if you can!!!!!

"Can I use dos to move it back?"

Yes you can - although you'll need a WinME bootdisk, since there is no built-in support for restarting in DOS mode.

Once in DOS, just navigate to the folder you'd moved the file to and perform a copy:

copy vmm32.vxd c:\windows\system

After I posted this question I continued searching the net for a solution and I found the same advice that you have given me.

Thank you very much for responding to my question, because as it turned out it was the solution and I am now back up and running (and on cloud nine as I still have all my saved data).

I'm glad to hear things went well, and your problem was resolved.

It's a good idea to keep a backup of that file on a floppy or elsewhere, in case something similar occurs again - as you know, the only other (simple) solution is to reinstall Windows in its original folder

Thanks for the update
