hi, i just ran into the ol' "missing or corrupted" vmm32.vxd file problem on windows millenium.
now, i have a back-up disc that i put in and rebooted - but nowhere can i choose an option for loading with cd support. i've rebooted regularly and rebooted hitting the F8 button and thus, ran it in all four modes from the F8 menu - normal, safe mode, logging, and step by step.
i have no idea how to get anything off of my cd-rom and re-install or back-up or re-name or whatever, because before i can DO anything, the dos prompt comes up "The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd
type the name of the Windows loader (e.g. c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd)
C>"...now what...
thanks.

Then you'll have to try and kick start setup.exe from DOS, unless you have excellent DOS skills in which case you could try and rebuild VMM32.VXD. If not you'll have to try doing the following to re-install the operating system.
Boot with your ME startup disk (boot disk), get to an A:\> prompt and type:
cd c:\windows\options\install
or ...
cd c:\windows\options\cabs
and press enter, then type:
setup or setup.exe or oemsetup or oemsetup.exe
and press enter after each one.
The reason why so many variables, is because it seems you have a branded computer (OEM) your just covering a few bases. Usually "options\install" and "setup" (enter) works fine for a straight Microsoft ME CD.
Or failing that, try and kick start it from the one command from the A:\> prompt, which might be best.
cd c:\windows\options\install\setup.exe
press enter.
Now think laterally if that doesn't work. Substitute the other variable commands listed for the last two sections of the path (install or cabs\_ _ _ _).
Anyway that should kick start Windows setup, you will have to follow it through and insert the serial number etc as and when asked.
Full WinME Startup Disk there if you don't have one.

hello whizard;
try this and see if it works,go into msdos
and type in,
copy vmm32.vxd c:\windowsand see if that works. note spaces between..
zenno

That won't work. That file is a unique file and once it's gone it's gone. The only way to rebuild it is by doing a fairly complex DOS routine.
The website to the DOS rebuild is down at the moment, due to hurricanr damage in Florida, when it's back up, type in google - Vmm32.vxd - and look for the Easydesksoftware link and "How to Repair the Vmm32.vxd".

i tried all of those variations (under cd-rom support - dunno if that has anything to do with it) and ALL of them said "invalid directory"
this sucks.

What's the make and model (OEM) of the machine ?
How old is it ?
Is it still under warranty ?
And do you have an original WinME CD with your various driver disks, or do you just have the manufacturers "recovery disks" ?

the computer itself is a dell dimension 4100. it's a little over three years old... i have no idea about the warranty, but that's a good question. i have a boot disk that i downloaded as well as the original driver discs and the reinstallation cd for WinMe.

You need an experienced Dell user for this if those commands don't work. Looking around, your not the first person to say what you've said (try their forum).
You can obviously use the ME startup disk ok, how about booting with it and having the installaion CD already in the drive and kick starting setup that way. Straight from the disk.
