I had the following error message when I started WinME:
The Following File Is Missing or Corrupted:
0\dblbuff.sys
0\ifshlp.sys
0\System\Vmm32.vxd
Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g.,
C:\Windows\System\Vmm32.vxdAnd I can't do anything.
When I tried to install WinME again it said something like
that I had an unfinished installation and could therefore
choose Safe-start. I thought that as I hadn't tried to
reinstall before I couldn't have an unfinished
installation and therfore I chose the normal one. After
copying all the files the computer rebooted and the same
error emssage occured!!!
I then tried to get the Safe-start message again at
reinstallation BUT I CAN'T GET IT BACK. HELP! How do I get
it back?
I used scandisk of course and scanreg aswell without any
success. A part from this I've tried to choose Safe start
option after reboot+ctrl button pressed with the same
error messages appearing.

reformat and start again. what are your system specs? make sure the anti-virus in the bios is switched off. are you using a 98
or ME boot disk. give a bit more detail.

I have:
-an AMD Duron 800 MHz socket A
-a Gigabyte GA7-ZX-H Socket A motherboard
-192 Mb RAM
-20 GB HD IBMI've read through quite a few of the messages regarding missing ifshlp.sys file and I've followed many of the advises given but with no succes. FOr example I've tried to put in a device line in config.sys but I don't have any config.sys(!!) Is that OK??? If not how could I make one to work with my system?
And I've never seen anyone having error message for dblbuff.sys but I read in Microsoft support that you could put the buffer to zero in msdos.sys so I did that but still remains the other error messages.
What I don't get is that it states an zero before the slash and the filename...strange hey?!

How did you set up the partitions on this hard drive? Did you use the "utility disk" that came with the hard drive? Or did you use plain old fdisk?
I've seen something similar when someone was using a drive overlay program from a hard disk manufacturer.
If there is nothing on this drive you wish to save, start over with an ME or 98 bootdisk.
Run fdisk to create partitions.
Format your partitions.
Reinstall ME cleanly.

The things is that everything looks ok when you take a look at the partitions in fdísk and all my files is on the HDD. In msdos.sys the bootdir points at c:\windows. Still he doesn't want to start up the OS.
The solution you give me about formating the HD is quite obvious, but of course I'd like to save the registry so I don't have to reinstall all the software and do all the config again... :(Thanx anyway for your time taken to answer.

Are dblbuff.sys, ifshlp.sys, and vmm32.vxd in the correct places? Or are they missing?
Do you have a drive overlay or something else riding in the Master Boot Record?

Yes they are in the right places all of the above mentioned files. I've even extracted nwe files from the cab files and exchanged ifshlp and dblbuff. Aswell, I changed the vmm32.vxd to vmm32.old and reinstalled WinME but with the same result even though vmm32.vxd was put in the right place by the reinstallation. :(
What's a drive overlay and how could I check if something is riding in the master boot record? Is there a dos program for this?
I have Symantec Anti-virus program but I've had it for a long a time without any problems so far.

Yipihey!
IT's working again!
I noticed that I had very little space on the HD - around 200-300 MB - on the C and D partition but on the e I had nothing! After I deleted some files I gave it som more room it was OK!!!
Over and out!
