Yesterday, I have installed a bootable winMe on a freshly formated hard disk. I realized that msdos.sys and io.sys are missing, not in any directory. All things seem to work fine but I cannot change the boot-up graphic setting....How to recover these files????

Hi Volakis, hello everyone,

Both of those files are hidden.

Go to My Computer and C:.

Select View and Folder Options.

Select the View tab.

Click next to Show All Files.

Click on Apply.

Click on OK.

The files should show up now.

Best Regards,
Mesich

You can boot the computer with a Windows ME boot disk and type at dos prompt:
sys C: (press Enter)
This will transfer the system files to the hard drive when Windows ME is already installed. It does not work for a clean install when the disk is empty. You have to install a full copy of Windows to sys the hard drive in this case.
Good luck.

Hi Petit Jean, hello everyone,

I agree that performing the sys c: command from a WinME boot disk will restore the files if they are missing.

I don't think they are missing though as they would not be able to boot into WinME without them.

You can perform the sys c: to a hard drive without an operating system. For example if you format the disk you could use format c: /s. This would format the hard drive and copy the system files to the root directory.

You could also copy the system files to a hard drive that has just been formatted using the sys command to make it bootable without an operating system.

I hope no offense is taken by this response, just wanted to clarify.

Best Regards,
Mesich

"I cannot change the boot-up graphic setting...."

First, what did you mean by that statement, exactly.

Second, open a MS-Dos prompt. If when it opens, it's at c:\windows. Type the following. If it's a C:\, skip the first cd\

cd\
(press enter)
attribxmsdos.sys
(press enter, and what does it say)
attribxio.sys
(press enter, and what does it say)
exit
(press enter, and the window will close)

Another thing :-) if you just want to look, and not change. (we can change later, if that's what you want)

Go Start...Run and type;
notepadxc:\msdos.sys
(press enter)

Does msdos.sys, open in notepad?
