first of all, all power cables and slave master set up correctly. the problem i am having is that my computer does not recognize my dvd/cdrom. it all started when i tried to upgrade driver. now there is no power to dvd/cdrom. device manager only shows dvdrom in safe mode. never appears under my computer. tried editing config and autoexec. when ever i edit it, it disappears after i reboot. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Make it the master on the secondary IDE make your HD the master on the primary. Disconect any other IDE device that you have temp. Enter your BIOS make sure that all of the settings are on AUTO regarding your IDE controllers. Set PnP to NO than save your changes and exit. Windows will boot and then if you can see the drive in My Computer your in good shape. If not you could have one of two issues. The drive went bad or the controller went bad. You could have a bad IDE cable too. Check the pins on the IDE controller and on the drive. One other thing is to use a different power tail to the drive...In all of that the answer will be found!

I have the same problem with a cd-r/rw except windows sees my drive in device manager. It started when I uninstalled the Adaptec Direct CD program so I could Install a newer version. I have tried everything I can think of but still nothing. It will work from the boot disk but reinstalling WindowsME has caused another problem. Does anyone know how to do a windows only clean install for WindowsME? The Windows98 way dosen't work!

I've had a similar issue, my new AMD Thunderbird system was loaded with WindowsME by the seller, and though it detects the CD drive on the secondary IDE cable it reports an error saying the drive is not connected or malfunctioning, all cables are connected and it is set up as the Master on the secondary IDE cable with my RW drive as the slave. If you figure it out let me know, as while I don't care much for WindowsME I don't think Windows98 can utilize my AMD 99Mhz to it's fullest advantage.
