I think if you don't know where to start trying to fix the Active Desktop HTML error then you probably don't know what to do to make Windows ME fast and reliable for yourself.

To me it sounds like it's something you've heard other people say and are just punting for back up.

The only back up you will get on here is *usually* from other like minded people either to lazy to make it work or ignorant to know any different. --> No offence intended.

There are a number of things you can do to try and solve the Active Desktop error, so first question is -

What version of Internet Explorer are you running exactly ?

IE 6 SP1
IE 6
IE 5.5 SP2
IE 5.5 SP1
IE 5.5

???

If your not sure, on IE, click Help >> About Internet Explorer, the details are there, jot them down.

These are some options for you.

1) Download and run Delindex

2) If your on IE 5.5 >> upgrade to IE 6 SP1, that should work.

3) If your on 5.5 SP2 >> Try repairing Internet Explorer.

>> Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.

>> On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, click Add/Remove, click Repair the current installation of Internet Explorer, and then click OK.

4) If your on IE 6 or IE 6 SP1, do the above repair as well.

5) If that doesn't work, extract a new copy of MSHTML.DLL from your cabs using the extract tool in msconfig.

MSKB A 129605 - HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files

MSKB A 265371 - HOW TO: Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows Me

IF you have IE 6 or IE 6 SP1 then the replacement MSHTML.DLL is in IEMIL_2.cab and MSHTML.DLL goes in.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

So you would do this.

Goto Start >> RUN >> type, msconfig

Click the "Extract File" button. In the following box, type MSHTML.DLL >> Start.

In "Restore From", type IEMIL_2.cab

In "Save File In", type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

It will then ask you if you want to back up the original MSHTML.DLL file >> Click Ok, then, Ok again to exit msconfig.

Now it asks you to restart. Do so.

The backup MSHTML.DLL file you just saved will be in C:\WINDOWS\MSConfig\Backups

You may need it later.

6) And probably your last option is to reinstall Internet Explorer.

I am running IE6
Yea...I read your previous post of how to get the active desktop working...I guess you were talking to some guy called Lakshu and I followed all the instruction you gave him...none of them seemed to work. I tried to extract the file and it said that the file cannot be extracted because it is protected and may not be copied or deleted. I tried downloading the SP and that didn't work. And as for Windows ME...that's my own opinion...I don't really keep up OS's that much but I am just starting to get into computers. So I'll try to use the links you gave me.

Lance,

Try using the, MSKB A 265371 - HOW TO: Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows Me.

In "Restore From", try typing C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL

In "Save File In", type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

I'm guessing at that because I don't have IE6. I DID have IE6 SP1, and know the file is in IEMIL_2.cab in that version. And also seen it work first hand (I did it).

If it's IE6, I don't know. I was assuming it might be in the same place. Looks like it isn't.

Failing that, then it's probably going to have to be reinstalling IE6 to sort it, if it's that important.

And try not to be pissed with me attitude defending ME, it's not the greatest M$ OS out there and was probably very ill conceived, but it can and does work ok for most peoples needs once you've tweaked it.

Apologies if I grunted at you, it was morning (for me anyways) 8-|

Please Post back and let us know what the outcome is of having tried any of this. To have to reinstall IE6 to solve this problem always seemed a bit drastic to me, as I've had more than my fair share of that failing miserably to.
