Product: Gateway Performa 1000
Comment:

After 3yrs. of non use due to a CD-RW drive recognition problem, thanks to a defective Adaptec ver.4.0,now (Roxio) CD burning sw. I finally come to appreciate some of the advantages of ME v XP. #1 being,it's kind of like having an old non copy guard VCR for handling certain image types on the web. It allows you to enlarge them to whatever, until too much distortion sets in. My biggest problem is that when I go to the Microsoft web site for the missed updates; repeatedly (over 2 months), after the 1st one (IE-6.0) and a (Go Back fix). I'm told that"I've got a MAC computer and I should go to their Mac support site." After a through investigation and a change of a network adapter card, it still continues to happen. I've talked to Gateway and MS. and get absolutely nowhere with them. I've tried looking-up the KB #'s, but get very few of what I know is supposed to be there. Does anyone out there know anything about this ? OR does anyone know all the KB #'s,for the security updates, fixes and the latest version of ME, is it 5.3 or 5.8 ? Is this MS's version of to "go buy VISTA and to hell with you!" > PS. > MS. no longer supports ME, but says all past updates are still available.

That is a know issue that has been going on for some time now...I thought it had been corrected, but apparently not. Try the Winsock fix mentioned in this thread:

After my 'newer' computer crashed for good, I restored my old WinMe and began searching for updates. It hadn't been turned on for 3years. The only updates that really worked ok were KB891711 and Q823559 (both at MS). Other updates from MS have to be hunted down by picking specific progam updates (like Word, Excell, etc.) and looking deep for those that actually are needed. I will say this for IE6 - a good download is at:
www.softwarepatch.com/tips/howtooe.html
During the download, if asked if you want to keep your more "up-to-date" file versions or download what they have? Down Load What They Have. It seems Windows ME doesn't like to mix new and old versions with old and new versions of anything.
As far as the MAC thing? It sounds like some sort of Identifier in some IE programming. "Search" for Apple, Mac, and things that sound Apple. See if they conflict with IE.

... various people (including me on my W98SE) have received that MAC message at different times. After various tries it came back OK, so I'm sure its an MS website bug. It could be that they are not taking MS Updates for old machines too seriously these days.

Maybe, but official support finished a year ago and folk had plenty of warning so they could have collected the updates as files the same way as I did for W98SE and burnt them onto CD. It was always on the cards that updates would stop sometime.

Those in the USA (if not elsewhere) could have even grabbed a free update CD from MS which took them up to 2004, so only 2 more years of updates would have then needed downloading.

I've already used my CD on two machines and it worked just fine - just clicked my way through them (quicker than going online).

I'm now collecting those for XP.
