My parents have their email on Outlook Express 5.0 they can't open it anymore. I think it might have something to do with installing Windows ME, because I'm pretty sure it was working before that. When I click on the Outlook Express icon I get this error message: "Msimn has caused an error in WAB32.DLL. Msimn will now close." It appears someeone else had the same problem in February and received this advice:

"Open Windows Explorer. Go to folder WINDOWS -> APPLICATION DATA -> IDENTITIES -> {37ADCD9D-F514-4443-93B2-8E8B72E67B04} -> MICROSOFT -> OUTLOOK EXPRESS. In there is all your mail. Rename the file FOLDERS.DBX to FOLDERS.OLD. Outlook Express should now work."

However when I click on "Identies" I get the following file: (9A883940-96A7-11D3-8CA8-84681C27E32B) instead of the one above. I tried to rename the file anyways as described above but it didn't do anything. So now I have a file named FOLDERS.DBX and FOLDERS.OLD. But maybe I didn't to it right. If anyone can help me that would be awesome because the support guy I talked to on the phone said he thought I'd have to back up the whole computer so he could perform "format & recovery". Apparently that means I'd have to reinstall everything that's been put on my computer since my parents bought it. Thanks for any help!!

WAB32.dll is the file that calls to/controls Windows Address Book(hence WAB). Renaming folders.dbx probably wouldn't help.

Try this:
First you have to make sure you are seeing hidden files and folders.
To do this, double click My Computer.
At the top of the browser window, click on Tools>>folder options.
Go to the View tab.
Set the folder options to Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Click apply>>ok.

Now... go to start>>search.
Search for *.wab (the file that holds the Windows Address Book).
Rename the file name... not the extension, but the name of the file... as in: wonker.wab rename to wanker.wab.

Open Outlook express.
Open the address book.
This will recreate the address book and give you a clean copy.
You can now import the addresses from the broken address book that you just renamed... ie: wanker.wab to get your addresses back.
