I just purchased a brand new HP PAVILION laptop N5420 with WindowsME and can't get the built-in mic to work. I make sure the mute box is unchecked under volume controls and have fiddled around all over "sound" from the control panel. do i need new drivers or registry change, where can I get this?

I would first make sure that you have all of the current Win ME drivers for each piece of hardware on the laptop. If you do and it still doesn't work I would contact HP and have them fix it for you since it is of course still under warrantee. And even better... If you still have the receipt, and the in-store warrantee is still in effect, take it back to the store you bought it from and have them give you another.

Double click the speaker Icon so that all the controls show. Go into "Options" click on Properties and make sure the microphone check box is checked. Like you I nearly went nuts trying to work this out some time ago.
