Need to uninstall/reinstall messenger.During uninstall process I receive an error message from uninstaller saying file C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\XP000.TMP is missing also C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER\MSNMESSENGER7.0.0777.If I ignore uninstaller no longer co-operates telling me to look in MSN.Msgs.msi (?) I am at a loss to understand any of this. If I had to guess I would say that the 'missing' file exists in Xp but not Me. Anyone in the group any experience of this ? If so is there a fix ? Apologies in advance if this has been discussed before or there is a FAQ in microsoft help files .I did look.

It's telling you to find MsnMsgs.msi and double click on it and then use the repair option. (install missing files or repair damaged files and data).

You would find MsnMsgs.msi by using 'Search' >> 'For Files and Folders'

Thanks Viking.
The situation is worse than that I'm afraid.
I do indeed have MsnMsgs.msi but the file belongs to the install (in 2004) of version 6.1. If I try and tinker with the file I get the message........ uninstall later version (my Version 7.0) first. I would dearly love to uninstall the later version but as my earlier post said uninstaller will not co-operate without either of the missing files I mention in my first posting. If I try to override uninstaller refers me back to MsnMsgs.msi :-((
Something odd here. Could I ask you to think again and advise ?

What happens when you double click the MsnMsgs.msi from Explorer (search for files)?

No repair option at all?

How 'dirty' have you been? Have you tried downloading a new 9x/ME MSN messenger version and installing directly over the top?

Thanks (again) Viking. When I click MsnMsgs.msi my system insists on the version downloaded in 2004 (Version 6.1) I have downloaded a new copy of 9x/Me and that installed OK (with a repair option) Seems to work OK only 'problem' is I now have two copies of Version 7.0 on my programme list and cannot get rid of the older one. Any further thoughts on how I can clear that out and off my programme list ? My new version can be uninstalled in the conventional way. Windows Installer Cleanup Utility ? Much appreciate the link to that tool. I have downloaded but going to take a few hours before I decide if I am brave enough to run it :-))

You've done it arse about face (backwards) :)

You should have used the Installer CleanUp Utility first and then installed the new 9x/ME messenger to the same location. It pretty much tells you that in the MS article verbage.

You'll have to try to uninstall the new one via add and remove programs (you say it can be done), then run the utility.

Make a restore point first if you're nervous, in fact make a couple. One now, before you uninstall what you've just installed - if that's clean, another one after. Then run the utility.

When you run it, follow your nose through the dialogue box, you should see one messenger entry there, highlight it and click the 'Remove' button. The warning dialogue box that appears next says:

Warning -- All selected products will be removed from the Windows Installer database. In order for the products to work properly, you must individually re-install all products selected. Select OK to continue removing the product, Cancel to abort.
