Subject: Merry Christmas virus? |
Comment: In the last 2 weeks I have gotten two emails that said Merry Christmas with wierd attachment names. The first one my Inoculateit PE caught as I was going to open it, the second one just came today. I forwarded it to my hotmail and scanned it with McAfee, and it said no virus found. So thinking it was safe I tried to open it, and ZoneAlarm came up with a warning. Needless to say I didn't run it. Both were sent from friends, unwittingly I'm sure. I just did a search of cai.com and a google search, only references were to one from last year and the year before. Has anyone else come across this? I am telling all my friends to get ZoneAlarm and InoculateIT PE, so they don't send me viruses!

Reply: (edit)suzi, call the friends these emails came from and ask if they sent them. I wouldnt open anything i didnt ask for. If someone you know is sending you an attachment they should let you know. Hotmails virus scanner missed a virus for someone at work and claimed a valid file was a virus for another coworker. I wouldnt trust it 100%. Download and install AVG After You run the online scan at Trend Micro Just to make sure your not infected.

Reply: (edit)I had this virus, it really messed up my system. Search at an engine for 'sysrnj' it will tell you how to get rid of it. What this does is it starts changing all the files with known file extensions from whatever they were to .exe files. Its really bad and doesnt allow you to run any programs except internet explorer

Reply: (edit)I was in such a hurry to get rid of these that I did not write down the attachment names. The two were not exactly the same, but similar, I think. I deleted both messages, and deleted the one to my pop mail from the deleted messages, otherwise I would check and post the name. Thanks everyone.

Reply: (edit)Maybe I forgot to say it, but I did not open either one of these. I sent emails to these friends and told them that they had sent a virus.

Reply: (edit)Jeff, I can't remember the name of the attachment for sure, it might have been that. The first one I received, not the one I received today. If I get another one, I will write it down before deleting it!!! Thanks. Cool site you have there.

Reply: (edit)Crimbo.exe is not a virus on my machine, it's a animated christmas card. It's a couple years old besides.

Reply: (edit) Isn't hotmail , webmail . If you try to scan webmail it can't be done . Your AV software will only work if your mail is actually downloaded to your pc . If you have an actual ISP mail account that you actually downloaded the messages to your pc then you would be able to scan it .

Reply: (edit)Yeah, but you could download the file from hotmail, without opening it, then you could scan the file with your AV program. Although crimbo.exe could be a Christmas card, I think some people have named a virus that. I personally would be suspicious of ALL exe files I recieved from people. If someone wants to send an animated Christmas card, let 'em do it in plain 'ole HTML.

Reply: (edit)vipergg - Hotmail has McAfee antivirus scan; it scans all attachments automatically before you can open them. That's what I meant when I said I scanned it in Hotmail. I do know the difference between webmail and my isp mail. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)Warning Folks.... McAfee does not scan your inbox email.... not in Outlook Express... NOPE NOPE NOPE... its for corporate email, not your pop3 accounts. But if you do click that attachment and get the virus and it does some damage....then McAfee might kick in and say ooooops I shoved Sircam up its nose and I still said it wasn't a virus. I fought with McAfee about it and they finally admitted it won't scan your inbox... I dumped McAfee after two years of thinking I am safe and as always being careful. Then I got Panda..... mucho better. Email Attachment solution... to all your friends and fam....do as I have done with them and my members of my site. Type NA...then the subject in the subject line. This tells them... that there is NO ATTACHMENTS... and the rule is if I am sending one.... I will write you first and tell you I am sending it and what it is about first. IF IN DOUBT..... THROW IT OUT
