i have just bought a new athlon 1800xp with 512mb ddr pc2700 ram, when in windows and i start to do things i.e zip and unzip files etc my memory usage goes slowley up to about 99 percent, but when all jobs are done and closed it still stays at 99 percent the only way to refresh it to normal(27%) is to reboot. why is this and what can be done. thank you.

If your programs are working well don't bother with it.
Don't use any utilities that free RAM...
(If you open new programs when you are at this 99% you will see that memory is released and they function well)

edsod is right.

You DID install memory in order to have it used? Windows does that and if something else needs more, windows (without any assistance) is more than capable of allocating it.

Remember: Free Memory is wasted memory. And Windows does not require available memory in order to function.
