Went from 128 mb to 384 mb of memory 2 days ago. I was very careful, wore my wrist strap, handled carefully etc. Every since my computer is making a low strange noise - like when the computer comes up every now and then, sort of like when it's counting the memory and gives an o.k. on start up.

It gave me memory error as the manufacturer said it would, I had to go in to the bios and press F10 to save the changes and reboot, now it counts the memory on startup with an o.k. on all.

Is this a normal sound that so much SDRAM memory makes or is it the memory failing, as I heard the burnout period is a couple of days.

The store also stated my computer, a 5008US Compaq Presario has 2 memory slots and it does not matter which order they are in.

Thanks.

It is super fast.

I haven't heard of ram making noise,
most likely when you were installing the new ram you might have bumped something, or when putting the case back on, something is now vibrating. a cable could be rubbing against
the cpu fan, screws are loose on something etc.

I would try swapping your sticks around to see if it changes.
I run 512 in my Compaq with no trouble.
Then again if it's running well you may wish to leave it??

Being a new stick , if it dose fail there's also warranty?

Jim.

Have warranty on it. It sounds like it's counting change or something once in a while.

It's opeating much faster.

Thanks, will look into it and check scenario.

Yes it does matter where the memory is, depending on what yours came with, I will give you an example of mine, My computer came with (2) memory banks, and 64 mb, when I upgraded the memory (I can go to 512), I thought well I will get one 256, then later get the other 256, for right now I wanted to just keep the 64 and add the 256 total of 320, On the compaq site it will tell you to put the new memory if more than orig put it in the one that has the 64 which is #1 so in my case I removed the 64 and put it in #2 and put the new 256 in #1, they are not numbered but the orig is #1, it causes problem if you do it anyother way because I did it wrong at first, so if you doubt this, please go to compaq site and read your information as I know its the same as mine.

A counting change noise? Coming from what is actually nothing more than a small printed circuit board? I seriously doubt this can be a case of a bad memory stick- something had to get bumped or moved when the case was opened. Something's just not seated right somewhere- Just like etc. said.

I run an Emachines and it makes wierd noises-
the mfg says it won't run over 256 megs and it has already gotten to 384 or so and we are headed for 512 -Me thinks my pc is making the noises like yours -because it is having a damn party in there- it is fast too!
Relax- if it ain't broke don't fix it - enjoy the noise - and- it may be the little pc firemen- getting ready to spray the insides of your pc- in case it catches fire- as it is for sure- SMOKEN' - :}

Hi, my problem was an operator one, this is the first memory I installed and the 2nd 256 mb stick was not properly seated.

Also Sue, I took the smaller 128 mb out and put the 256 mb in its place and made sure both were properly snapped down with a firm but not too hard click.

No more cha ching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guarantee, what fixed it was putting the highest MB of memory in the slot that had memory to begin with, example my computer came with 64 mb I have 2 slots capable of 256 mb in each, when I upgraded my memory with a 256 I put it in the slot that was empty, and I got the same thing talking with Compaq thru email, they sent me a letter or copy of specification and it said you always have to have the higest Memory new or old in the orig slot, If I would have got 64 mb and put it in the empty slot (it would have been alright) JUST AS SOON as I switched the memory all that noise went away, and before that I kept reseating and reseating till I was blue in the face, I even thought the memory was no good, glad you got it going correctely....Sue
