As this is happening before windows boots, it is a hardware problem. Either your memory is faulty or possibly, your motherboard battery is low or dead or you are overclocking your system too much.

It just says 164 memory size error and my processor speed is exactly the way the factory set it at when i bought this pc compaq said it could be my BIOS chip but i doubt that if that was the case i couldn't boot up. How would you know if it is the clock battery?

Some Compags make you go into the Bios and tell it you changed the memory size. Look in your Compag book on how to access the bios. Hold down the DEL key during bootup, or it could be the f2 key as well.

It's f10 and Compaqs BIOS are very simple you can't do much to it.

If you've reset the size of your swap file, make sure you didn't set it too small as this can cause startup problems.
