OS: ME
CPU/Ram: PIII 900MHZ 128 MB RAM
Comment:

No idea when exactly it began, but the majority of files I try to play with media player bring an error. Music files are fine, it is the movie files that are a problem (again, some will play).
I get the following error messsage when trying to play file:
MPL Loader: 'The dll "cpuinf32.dll" cannot be loaded. OS reports: One of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found'.
I click 'ok'.
Then another MPL Loader error message comes up, stating that 'the dll "mplapx.dll" cannot be loaded. OS reports: One of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found.'
I use Trojan remover, have Norton Firewall, Norton Antivirus, and use Ad-aware regularly...so no issue there.
I am using I believe Media Player 9.0.0.2980, and I seem to recall that with ME it can be problematic to try to uninstall version 9 to revert back to the stock version of media player.
Please are there any ideas as to a fix? I have tried reinstalling setup, it does not fix it.
Thanks in advance!

I have Win ME and media player 9 with no problems.
I don't have the file- cpuinf32.dll
or cpuinf32!

A google search points to Sonic MyDVD software installation.....

Hmmm...that does seems suspect...both errors are listed on that page, although I assure you I didn't proactively download any of this...any idea how to get it off the system - I did a search, found a folder, not much in it...it is 'sonic solutions' and has a folder inside called 'dvd-it' or something...I would hope perhaps removing it manually would fix, but of course, that's taking a chance

If you have a DVD drive on your PC, a DVD disc may have installed it's own viewing player (or partly installed).

This is not the complete fix but......

Open Windows Media Player - TOOLS - OPTIONS - FILE TYPES, make sure there is a check in the boxes next to the file types you want the Media player to play, then click APPLY - OK.

It's possible the MyDVD software may have taken over handling of video files .mpeg .avi
etc

Post back if this has it sorted. If it still does not work, you may have to edit the registry. Someone a little more competent than myself will have to advise you on that bit.

I had a similar problem when Quicktime took over handling my downloads... a poster on here (newgrl) sorted me out after many months without being able to update any programs. This was my post....

You may have to do something similar??

I tried to download media player 9 last week and I can't find where it downloaded to. Maybe I just don't know what I am looking for. Microsoft site says the download was a success though. I did run across it in my registry files too.

Also a couple of days ago I saw there was an update (service pack, I believe)for the media player 9. Maybe you can help me out finding mine?

You probably have already read this article but incase you didn't you might like to read this. Go to Microsoft link here and there is more information there to read.

Playing DVDs

If you have more than one DVD decoder (also called an MPEG-2 decoder) installed on your computer, you may experience problems when playing DVDs. To resolve the problem, you can remove the decoder that you do not use by using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Hope this can help.

Hi and thanks for the input...here is the situation now...
I don't have a DVD player at all...just a couple of drives for R/W. This problem cropped up suddenly, and it doesn't apply to all video files, just unfortunately the majority. I don't have an 'IOmega' Drive installed, so it's odd that I would get the error associated with their product, and they are saying I should download some patch from their site. Bizarre! Anyways, the problem is still there. I wish I knew of a way to uninstall MP 9 and revert to the stock version I had on the system, then to download 9 again and see if that works, but with ME & its system restore function, I am not sure if that will work.
Any further ideas?
Thanks!

Let's have a look in the registry (but not make any changes - YET)....

START - RUN - type REGEDIT - OK - EDIT - FIND - type either SONIC or MYDVD then click FIND NEXT. Press F3 to continue the search after it stops at panaSONIC (drivers folder).
Do you have SONIC or MYDVD in there?

I don't think your problem is with Media Player but similar to my QuickTime player problem i.e. Another program has taken over playing these files.
Have you set Media Player to handle the file extentions as stated in Response Number 3?

If you can't see the extentions in the files you have, it's because your PC is set up to hide them. To show the extentions, open the folder and select TOOLS - FOLDER - OPTIONS - VIEW - remove the check mark (tick) in the box that says HIDE FILE EXTENTIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES - APPLY - OK.

Are the files that will not play all the same extention? e.g. all .avi or do you have some .avi files that will play and some that will not (I expect it will be all of the same).

Try right clicking one of the non-working files and select OPEN WITH and select Media Player. If it will not play, it could be the media player, if it will play - I am still of the opinion that it another player (sonic mydvd) that is the problem...

This program comes bundled (a cut down version) with some hardware and therefore may be also on some free CD's that come with magazines etc

See what you come up with here and post back.

Michael2: Thanks so much...i threw caution to the wind, and went and downloaded those dll files, and inserted them as it instructed on that second forum page...i guess when I uninstalled something, it took something I needed with it...very sneaky...anyways, all movie files work now.
Thanks again
