Media player does not play Avi files

Hello, I have some avi files that are compressed and my computer cannot play them, It tries to download a codec but cannot, Then it will play the audio of the file But no video, I know the files are good because they use to play on my other computer before I had to reformat the hard and reinstall windows, now it will not play on the computer...I know I can play asf, rm, Video...I don't know what was on the computer That made it possible to play the files before I had to format the hard drive...Please let me know what I can do or if theres something that I need to download to get my computers to play these compressed avi files....Thanx....Adam
