me won't recognize dvd rom

I've been reinstalling OS's on my computer. On installing Windows ME I've encountered the problem that ME won't recognize the existence of my dvd-rom drive - which means I can't load anything from cd. Has anyone encountered anything like this before? The system was working fine before I started reinstalling.
The dvd rom drive is a Toshiba one, but I've not been able to deduce any more info from the label on it. But what puzzles me is that according to the Toshiba site, at http://www.toshiba.com/taissdd/support/drivers.shtml all Toshiba dvd rom's work fine on Windows 9x without requiring any special drivers - which seems to rule out the obvious 'need driver' explanation.

Is that site updated? Because if it is, it doesn't mention ME or XP in it. Try downloading the atapi.exe file and see if it recognizes your dvd drive after the install.
Hope that helps.
Kevin.

OK cheers for the replies. Sadly it wasn't a NOIDE issue. Since I need the computer working urgently I had to give up on that and install XP instead (which does work fine).
