Upon starting Musicmatch 9.0 it stated there was a security update available so i updated it. Upon the restart I got a Explorer.exe won't load reinstall Windows. Tried to boot up in SAFE mode still no luck. Put in a start up disk and am currently doing a complete disk scan. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just run a system restore to a time before you installed the software.

Hi Jennifer,

My system restore has never worked. This problem was actually acknowledged by Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299313/en-us#appliesto

I have tried their fixes several times (overwriting my explorer.exe files) from both CAB files on my c drive and from my original disk with negative results.

I really don't want to reinstall Windows again (did it 2.5 years ago when the computer was just over a year old, at the request of the Dell tech). Don't you just love ME? Any other help would be appreciated.

From what I've read, 2.5 years is pretty good for a Windows installation to last and act right. My ME installation has been going strong since mid 2001, but I have tweaked it up pretty good.

The few times I've needed it, System Restore has worked fine for me, but scanreg /restore is practically as good or better in some cases.

I've had System Restore disabled for quite some time now and use Norton Ghost (their only good program, imo) to make an image on CDR now and then.

Hey Leroi,

Yea I disabled system restore and tweaked the virtual memory settings as well to try and add some stability. I have tried scanreg/restore twice as well but no luck.

Somebody told be if I can get an ME disk (not the one that came with the system since that would overide my data) I may be able to overwrite just the ME and hopefully get to start w/o loss of my data.

Louie

Hmm, do you get an error message when you attempt scanreg /restore? Are you certain you are entering the command correctly?

If you run scanreg /restore from within Windows, there must be a space between scanreg and the slash, I don't think it needs a space if entered from from DOS.

I've read that you need to uninstall IE 6 (roll back to 5.5) before attempting to reinstall Windows over itself so I don't know what to advise.

Leroi,

Actually I'm able to do the scanreg/ restore no problem and have picked 2 of the older (working) sets. No errors however when I boot up I get the same problem. I think I may have a few problems

Error loading Explorer.exe.
You must reinstall Windows

The Following File Is Missing or Corrupted: C:\Windows\Ifshlp.sys

Windows Could Not Upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1 %2

I have tried extracting the explorer.exe and the IFshlp.sys and ifshlp.dll files from my original DELL ME disk to overwrite the current files and although the extractions were succesfull the results were still negative.

I tried following Microsoft solution on the last problem (which I had seen before it never caused a startup problem, but I could't duplicate what they were trying to get me to do.

Thanks for the link, this is my next option following by having to buy another computer and slaving this hard drive to it.
