I recently upgraded my operating system from 98 to ME. I now contantly get the following error message (about once a minute.)
"Explorer has caused an error in WININET.DLL.
Explorer will now close."If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer.Restarting does not make this message go away. I've been dragging it into the corner and leaving it open.
Anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?

That would be your auto update feature trying to call B. Gates and letting him know that he is in your house too......LOL...Boot in safemode (hold down the control key at bootup) go into add and remove programs and remove the auto update feature and you should be ok till the next problem....then restart

I have the same problem, and the solution suggested does not work. I've tried installing the wininet.dll patch from the Microsoft site but it says the one in place is newer, so the patch does not need to be installed. Argh! I've heard deleting the temporary internet files and history fix it, but I can't even get a DOS prompt with WinME! Any help greatly appreciated!

I managed to fix this problem myself in the end and will now share my voyage....
I renamed wininet.dll to wininet.old and it allowed me further into the loading of Windows ME. The error message now was about kernel32.dll. After pressing close, I was allowed to load my CD burner software and back everything up. I re-installed Windows ME but the problem was still there. So, with all files backed up, I re-formatted the C drive, re-installed it and, of course, all is now fine. I know it sounds a bit drastic, but it does work. Apparently, if you partition your hard drive and put all your personal files on the newly created D drive, you can happily format the C drive and keep all your files. Apparently Partition Magic 6 is good for this, although I've not used it yet.
