My computer had several trojans. I was working on getting rid of them and the computer will now only bootup on safe mode. I've tried reinstalling windows but that didn't help to get rid of the problem. I'll be in the middle of booting up and it will shutdown and restart or go to a black screen with a promp, until I just let it bootup in safe mode. It will not let me run a virus scan. When I do, it makes a awful noise and shuts down. I did run a scan disk. And now, it will not detect my modem. (Im on another computer) someone please HELP!!!

The difference between safe mode and normal mode is that most drivers are not loaded including your CD-Rom, modem, sound and video driver reverts to a default safe driver. Just a suggestion : try reinstalling your motherboard drivers while in safe mode. If you have a box with a name on it ... you can't do that .... post more info.
Best

In Safe mode, you should be able to start and run a manual virus scan if the program is installed on the system. You should also be able to run programs like Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D if they are installed.
Down load a copy of Stinger and save it, then copy it to a diskette and from safe mode on the infected system, run the stinger program from the diskette. This will at least allow you to check for some common virus that damage or block virus scan programs.
If you have Ad-Aware and/or Spybot installed on the system, you can download their update files, copy them to diskette and update the version on the infected machine in Safe Mode this way also.
Instead of Safe Mode, use the selective boot option and start one thing at a time. This will allow you to determine which section of the boot process the crash occurs, and will give you an idea of what needs to be repaired. Often virus/trojans damage the Networking code or Winsock.dll and these have to be rebuilt to get the system running. If you suspect this is the case, you can use the Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab (in Safe Mode) to first remove the Communications - Dial-UP Networking support, and then add it back. This will usually correct any problems in the networking support area by replacing the networking and winsock programs and setting them up again.
See the web page in the home page link for more information.
