I fixed up our old desktop for my daughter. It has win 98SE on it and connects to the internet via my wireless network. All works OK (except networking)
I have a WIN ME CD
My question is: Is there any advantage to replacing the OS with ME???

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Choice of OS depends on two things really: hardware, and what you want the machine to do.

Unless there is some needed feature of WinME that is unavailable in 98, overall you would probably be better off using Win98.

Pros & cons of both systems would be lengthy

I might be one of the last, if not the only, fan of WinME. It doesn't work well for anything that requires you to leave your PC on long-term because of a known resource leak but, for a lot of applications, I find it quite usable. I put it on my mother's Email/Word/Solitaire machine and she rarely has trouble. The trick is in the tweaking. Try the recommendations here:

There are plenty of fans here in the WinME forum, but it also attracts (more than its share of) "OS bashers"

I don't have a problem with it, but prefer 98 since it is less of a resource burner and has a better DOS interface - on the plus side: system restore and a more current PnP driver library

Well Iam also one of the hold outs on sticking with Windows ME ! I have found once I properly configured it for optimal performance ,it behaves very well , and I rearely have any problems with it . Sometime ago I started recieving a error when in Windows Explorer and told by more then one person the only way to fix that error was by reinstalling the O/S .Well I was very upset at the thought of that ,I have added many extras to my system ,both hardware and software. I do have a complete set of floppy disk for Norton rescue. However I figured B/4 I went thru the reinstall or tried the rescue disk set ,I would try a system restore to a time B/4 this error started, even though I was told a system restore would not eliminate the error .Well they where wrong and to my complete surprise and satisfaction it did work and I have not seen that error notice since. I like the layout of WinMe ,much more then WinXP ,at work I use a laptop with WinXP Pro. dont like the goofy interface at all ,much to much MSN like ! IMHO
Take Care Nick

You cannot really compare ME & XP - if your only problem is with the 'goofy interface' you may like to know that under Start properties you can get it to look & act exactly the same as ME, ...but far more stable.

Known resource leak? You mean RAM? And if so, how can it be fixed?

I'm not sure exactly what Mr phonix is on about (and I may not be alone), but all of the DOS based Windows (3.1 - 9x, ME) have a fixed memory heap which is independent of the amount of installed RAM. Some poorly written programs won't release this 'special' memory when closed, and, once the system is "out of resources", Windows crashes.

NT based Windows (XP, 2K) do not have this particular weakness

The original question had nothing to do with XP though (nickie's heartwarming anecdote notwithstanding)

There might be one possible advantage to ME, and that is, that "probably" when Microshafted finally stops all online support for '98, you might still get a year or two with ME support.

Yes, as said above, the first thing I do after installing X tra P utrid is to change the settings so it looks like 98, instead of the "goofy AOL interface", whatever that means.

I go with response number 7 - never fix anything that isn't broken, when you're using old and now unsupported operating systems.

However, as Nick and the other regulars here will know I am a big fan of ME but only when it is properly set up.

If you do decide to try it, set it up as explained on my homepage link and it should do a song and dance routine for you.

Something "new" in ME: some face-liftings, cripple system-restore function, some multimedia software (like thumbnail viewer, basic video editing software, etc).

In concise: there is no advantage whatsoever by upgrading to ME.

If you want to upgrade, you should try Win2000. It's the best, most stable, fastest, rock-solid OS from MS. It has all feature of XP without XP bloats, like xp firewall, new colorful interface which eat resources and slow the machine down, etc

I know about it :))

Try Win2000 clean install and XP one. You would feel the difference.
