My question is how can I tell if you have the newest System Restore on my computer?
I found this topic while reading about the windows media player 9 upgrade. I also rememberd that others have placed posts here of having problems with system restore not working.

Instructions you must read before updating Windows ME System Restore
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;119591

After you have read the instruction then go here for the System Restore download page.

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to restore a checkpoint that you created after September 8, 2001 in Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the restore procedure does not work after you restart your computer and you may receive the following error message:
Restoration Was Unsuccessful
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the algorithm that is used to calculate the checkpoint file name does not work after September 8, 2001.
RESOLUTION
Microsoft has released an update the corrects this problem. When you install this update, a checkpoint is automatically generated. Checkpoints that you create before you install this patch do not work after you install the patch. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Ok, this is probably so. I don't claim to know anything. I was just passing something along that I thought might be helpful to someone, Sorry.

But important or not I am trying to update Windows MediaPlayer 9 series and I can't finish this install because it tells me that I need to update my system restore Q290700 before finish the install. So can someone please give me some instruction. When I install the System Restore and when the install box pops up and ask me if I want to (open or save), which one do I click on. If the answer is save, where do I save it to and what do I name it if I have to name it? If the answer is open, then I can handle this one.

If you open tools in internet explorer and go to windows update it should give you details of all available updates for your system. You can select/deselect which updates you wish to install, and I would suggest that you should do the restore update first and then any others it suggests in critical updates, apart from the language packs (unless of course you really want them)

You know, I have already done a windows update and updated the critical update that was availible today, but I have almost all of the updates that there was offered. There were only a couple there that I didn't feel that I needed. I didn't see any offered for a System Restore. Do you supose that I could already have it installed? Is there anyway that I can varify that I have the correct one installed?

Tammy, you know what the right fix is. try to install it. I never tried to install a fix that was already on, but I doubt it would hurt anything.

Please, Lets go back to end of the begining. One more time, When I install the System Restore and when the install box pops up and ask me if I want to (open or save), which one do I click on. If the answer is save, where do I save it to and what do I name it if I have to name it? If the answer is open, then I can handle this one.

Tammy1949,

You asked, "Is there anyway that I can varify that I have the correct one installed?"

Click Start, then Run. In Run type;
qfecheck
and press Enter, or click OK.

This will call the "Update Information Tool". When this has appeared, click the + sign beside "WinME". The MS article and update, you referenced "Q290700". Look and see, if it's listed.(UPD290700) Also, click the + sign, in front of it. You should see,

SMgr.dll 4.90.0.3003
listed.

That's, if you have installed the update. If, you haven't, it will not be listed.(UPD290700)

Thank you. I just checked and it is not there.

So now that we have confirmed this will someone tell me, do I use the open command to download the file or save it to my computer?, which one do I click on.

If the answer is save it to my computer, where do I save it to and what do I name it if I have to name it? This was the only option I got when I looked into downloading it earlier.

Tammy1949,

Ok, you can go to Microsoft Windows Update V4, and get it installed there. It would probably be under the "Windows Millennium Edition" hyperlink, at the left, of the update page.

If, you are doing it, at the KB article page. You could make a folder, to download it to. Then, click the
Download 290700usam.exe now
and choose....

Hmmm, there is a link "119591", on the one you referenced "290700, that explains it for you. If, you have problems interpreting the instructions given, on that page. Reply back, and will walk you threw it, ok. Save me a little typing, that way ;-)

Good Luck,
CrazyOne

Ok, Thanks.
(1)Does this mean than in the download dialog box, when it ask me if I want to save or to open the file, should I click on(Save) and not the OPEN command?

(2)Can I save it to my (download folder) on my desktop or does it need a permanant folder to be kept in on the (C) drive?

Thanks, wawadave.

Tammy1949,

If, you are asking about, at the KB page, yes. As I started to say earlier. Make a folder, name it 290700 Update, or whatever you want to name it. Doesn't matter, what it's named(the folder). The name, of the file, will be filled in for you. Download it, to this folder. Then, when you are done with the internet, and things. You know, signed off the internet, and have put away things you are working on. Double click the file you downloaded.

Wait a minute, you could(I would) right-click this file, and click "Properties", then click the "Digital Signatures" (Tab). Verify, it's signed by Microsoft. But, that's just me ;-)

Where were we, yes. Double click the file, and answer yes. Then, you will get the option, to accept, or not to accept the agreement. If you don't accept the agreement, it wont be installed. I'm pretty sure, this will all be shown to you. When you double-click the file. So, I'll stop writing my novel ;-) Just read, and follow the prompts.

After, the computer has restarted. You can go back, and check, if it has been installed. The same way, I explained before. If, it shows, that it's installed. Just, delete the folder you made, with that file you downloaded. It's no longer needed.

Good Luck,
CrazyOne

Thanks CrazyOne. I didn't know this. Any way I tried to download it to my desktop download folder. I actually tried it twice but about spending an hour each time my Internet cut me off. That was my 3rd and last try. The first time that I tried, I was almost there, about 90 percent when it told me I had to do the system repair download first.

So now I am very frustrated!! I need to download a newer driver for my printer too, and now I think I will just plug the printer back in and leave it. Thanks to you all.

Tammy1949,

Something tells me, we're not on the same page here. Even, with a really slow dial-up connection. It shouldn't take that long, for the "System Restore Update", to download. That's, what I was talking about, and thought you were also.

That's what the subject was about anyway. Now, are you talking about the "System Restore Update", or the "Windows Media Player 9", that took so long. Have to admit, you have me curious.

Sorry, guess I'm ahead of myself and a little tired. I did the system restore and it went fine, thank you. I was talking at this time about the media player 9. It didn't go too well as you have noted on my last message. If I could afford it, I would go with dsl, but at this time I will have to stay with this slow 56k. So if you can help with any ideas on downloading this media player 9, I would be very happy.

Tammy1949,

Ok, as for the media player. Don't know where you're at so, keep that in mind, ok.

First thing you could try, is go to a library, or community center. See, if you could download it there. Librarians, can be a real life saver, sometimes. I guess, you could just call them :-) (silly me)

Second thing, if a friend, or relative has a fast internet connection. Have them download it, and burn it to a disk, for you.

Third, check with a local computer shop. Ask, if they would download, and burn it for you, and the cost.

Some places don't charge, if the computer was bought, or serviced there. Or might charge, just a little fee, for the disk ;-)

Also, try to do big downloads, at low internet traffic times. With your computer.

If, you download things this way. Also download the latest DirectX, and codecs. If, you think the media player is a large download :-) The directX, is about three times as big :-)

Now, I'm getting ahead of myself :-) The way I install, is a little different. But, you get the idea. However you download this stuff. Make a list, of some other big downloads, you're having problems completing. And use the rest of the space, on the CD.

Well, good luck Tammy1949, and you're welcome.

CrazyOne
yes, tired. i know that word, all to well.

I just checked on my windows updates and looked into the history of my installs and it says that it media player 9 was a success. But I just looked at my media player program in the help section for the latest version it still reads 7. It never showed me that it completely installed when I was trying to install it.

Do you have any idea what is happening? I did back up the licience onto a floppy, but do I need to do anything with it? The media player doesn't ask me to do anything.

Oh, I must have been in outer space somewhere. I do have the latest direct X. It was offered in a windows update not long ago.
