Any ideas? ME OS, Compaq, AMD Athlon 1.2 (new), NVIDA TNT 64(new), 60g HD, 250 watt power supply.
Original system is about 18 mths old. System freezes started about 6-8 mths ago. (Doesn't matter the app. Also freezes just siting there with no apps open.)
In the last 3 mths, Compaq replaced video card then system board then HD then processor (1.1 with a 1.2) (Now out of warranty.)Bios/drivers updated and have tried all of Trev's Tweaks (ver 4) and opening case and using small fan to cool. eventually system freezes. (have noticed occassional kernel errors when Kazaa running)
When it freezes, the keyboard and the mouse will not respond and Many times when powered off and then back on, the mouse and monitor still will not respond. May take several tries or sitting for a while or turning all AC power off the everything and then rebooting. Other times, initial reboot and system responds.
Have done several Quick Restores to original factory settings. Initially slows frequency of freezes but it still comes back with a vengeance.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

Doug, you may want to try a bigger power supply, sounds like a 250 is not enough, you need at least 300 but i would try a 350 or even 400.

FJB. Thanks. After reading different posts on this site, I was wondering about that but since the 250watt is what originally came installed I assumed it was probably sufficient.
Any tips or how to's on replacing the power supply? I know of a couple of good parts suppliers in Atlanta so purchasing should not be a problem. I have never replaced a power supply.

When you mention a small fan I assume you mean additional case fan?
If the proc is 1.2 is the proc heatsink/fan up to the challenge to keep it icy cool?
Often be a fairly cheap and effective upgrade - might be worth consideration.

Doug there are many sites on how to replace a power supply just use GOOGLE to find some or you can copy and paste the link above.changing out a PSU is a pretty easy task. The reason I mentioned this as a possible solution is you have eliminated about all else and it sounds like you have done some upgrading of hardware since the machine was new.when a computer ships from the factory they put ia a PSU that will barely handle the factory installed hardware.good luck on it.

FJB. Thanks for the info. I plan to change out the 250 power supply to either a Enermax 350 or a Codegen 450.
However I got the system back up this morning and immediately deleted Kazaa (post how 2 delete KAZAA 23416.html) and edited it our of the registry, and also upgraded the VIA 4 n 1 chip drivers. So far, after 10 hours of runnning apps, DSL connection and leaving the machine just sitting, I have not had a freeze.
