When I turn on my computer the *Webshots* wallpaper and calendar loads but Windows ME doesn't. Nor the taskbar, just the wallpaper and calendar, that's it. The computer doesn't respond to any keys or mouse clicks. Of course then I do an improper shutdown and when it is turned on again it is supposed to automatically go into Scan disc but it doesn't. Every so many odd tries Scan disc will actually come up if you wait about 20 minutes but it won't run or cancel. When advising keep in mind that other than using a computer I don't understand much else, for example, what is a boot disk, what is starting in safe mode (as I've already seen as advice to similar problems.)

spiritdaughter54, 'safe mode' sounds to me like your best bet. As soon as you see anything other than the P.O.S.T. info at startup, start hitting F8 repeatedely and see if you go to safe mode. If you get there, I'd scan for a nasty first with crossed fingers. That MAY be all that's needed.
