Comment:
I am trying to install WinME after deleting essential files on win98.(I have no original Win98 CDs.) I am working with quite an old computer that belonged to a company. The drives have been partitioned into 3 separate directories C:, D: & F:. This alone is enough to confuse me. I have obtained Windows ME and a boot disk so I have gone through the motions of installation once. I had to save the files onto the D: as there was not enough space on C: All was fine until the computer rebooted after copying the files to my computer. When I tried to start everything up again the ME window appeared and then I was told that explorer had a problem and I had to reinstall WinME. A few other Windows appeared with error messages and all grinds to a halt. I am stuck. Will it help to format my computer first? How? Otherwise????? Any help would be extremely gratefully received. I am losing hair.
I have just tried to reinstall ME and upon reboot it says firstly explorer.exe has a problem. I okay this and "A required DLL file, SHLWAPI.DLL, was not found." I cannot okay this box and all is stuck...?|?
Okay, handbags away please... I have had genuine problems. I apologise for not being particularly learned when it comes to computers. This is a help forum after all. Thank you for the help thus far. Formatted my drives and seem to have installed ME eventually. The display is stuck at 640 by 480 pixels and I can only get 16 colours. Still, can at least get some work done.
You're not making the best use of the forum - I guess that's because you don't understand how it (and many other things it seems) works.
Yes, it is a help forum, and help has been provided. The rest is up to you. If you don't understand an instruction, ask for clarification, rather than spouting off and whining.
Wouldn't hurt to read the rules too, where you would have been advised NOT to double post, and that it is preferred that you at least acknowledge answers given in previous posts. That is also just common courtesy.
Handbags? nevermind
Like nearly everyone who has formatted a machine, you find yourself not knowing your display adapter's make or model and not having the appropriate driver installed. If you don't have the driver disks, you might try Everest Home Edition to determine the adapter model and search for the correct driver. If the display is integrated with the machine then you might check the Toshiba website for downloads for your model

I feel suitably chastened. Whining??..Maybe so. Is it courteous to be condescending? Thanks for the help all the same. It has been usefull. Reading back it seems a lot of people have the same problems with graphics & drivers.
Condescending? Not that I'm aware of, merely trying to express myself plainly to someone who appears extremely inexperienced (in so very many areas). This is not necessarily a permanent condition, so don't despair.
Yes, as mentioned already, it is a very common problem (or, more properly, a lack of preparation). You could have gotten more or less the same advice by using the forum's search feature (or even Google)
