ME freezes on install at Hardware D

Just bought a new Dell XPS 400. Trying to configure a dual boot system. I made two partitions and am attempting to install ME on the active partition (C. The ME install gets down to about 12 minutes remaining and freezes at "setting up hardware". How do I get past this?
Already tried unplugging the keyboard and mouse during detection.....
If the other OS is using the NTFS format, then the common drivers (like video) are using drivers that ME can not function with.
Try installing ME first, then the other OS.

I quess I'm just not understanding why you buy a proprietary system, and then proceed to reinstall the OS or all the other things people do. Manufacturers don't give you OEM windows install cd's any more. The restore cd is most likely a ghost image of the hard drive, which means you are not going to be able to do it the way FJ suggest, which is the correct way.

Probably the reason ME halts on detecting hardware is I believe down to the hardware having incompatibility with a MS-DOS based O/S.
I believe the 9xx MoBo Chipsets are not supported in any O/S except XP/W2K by Intel
