When starting windows I get to the hour glass and it freezes on the screen. I restart in Safe Mode and Scan Disk automatically starts, when it completes its scan it goes to start in Safe mode but then again freezes up with the hourglass on the screen. I started up with the Norton Utilities CD and was able to use Disk Doctor but it found no problems, when I restarted computer regularly or in Safe Mode sure enough it freezes. I cant get to my desktop either in reg mode or Safe Mode to try to run system restore. I didnt keep my NU emergency disks current and dont know how to use DOS. But I'm willing to try any resolutions.

Is there a way to fix it besides format? Or is there a way to reinstall ME without losing your files and programs already installed on the hardrive?

Thanks for everyones help! I made a bootup disk from bootdisk.com and was all charged up and ready to get my system up when I got home from work but when I put the disk in and restarted my computer a mesage came up and said to remove media from drives and restart. Still no go I even ran Norton Virus CD for 7+ hours last night and it found no viruses even Disk Doctor from the CD give me a clean bill of health. A friend told me that maybe my Rewiter drive is in default and suggested I unplug it and see if the computer boots up. My CD player works (havent tested the CDR yet)I read CD's from my CD drive and my A drive works but havent been able to get into DOS or bootup from the boot disk I made. Any pointers for booting up or any other sugestions. Thanks for your help in advance!

Hello all, just to give an update of any advances I made to get my system up and running. I'm still not up :( tried many options. I put in my Compact Disk that has restore on it. I ran it and after 28 minutes and restore up to 31% it stopped and said: "Error# 1805 Error Writing to image file" and had a red circle with an X in it. When I run my bootdisk floppy I got from bootdisk.com my computer tells me after restarting it (with the bootdisk in drive) "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart". I hate to reformat and lose all my hardrive contents but it appears that my be my only option since I cant even boot up. Could it be that my boot disk download was filtered some how while downloading it here at work and its not a complete bootup file? It has the book disk icon in the floppy? On another note I'm getting all these weird emails in my Yahoo bulk folder: #1 Inet Email Security System size 142k #2 Microsoft Security Dept size 154k #3 MS Net Message Storage Service size 142k #4 Network Security Dept Newest Sec Patch 154k #5 bartleviv1indiatimes subject"partnership required" 4k
I dont know what these messages are or why I'm getting something about india in my email. I'm not indian or india or what ever you call it. Are these Microsoft updates commom email or does it look suspicious (all around the same size)?

Hello All, Well my computer is up and running. I called a computer tech that does house calls in my city and he got it up and running. Here is a break down of what he did: I wanst able to bootup so he used a floppy that had, it had the program called "Ultiamte Start Disk" on it. The tech got me booted up in a few seconds with that disk! He then ran Norton Disk Doctor and Norton came back with 3 concerned items- (one was low concern and 2 were medium concern). I asked him would that of been the problem and he said that one of my registry settings that Norton Disk Doctor gave a "Medium" to was concerning him. He went ahead and fixed it using Norton and cleaned out temp files and checked out other settings I had. All in all $112 later I was up and running. I guess I went wrong when I uninstalled Norton a couple of days before crashing at least Norton may of givin me a warning before hand. I also should of had a bootup disk. What a learning experiance! He stayed for about 2.5 hours and we talked alot during his diagnosis and mending of my system. He recomended Spybot, Ad-Aware, AVG antivirus and installed a trial verision of a defrag program (I forgot the name but I thinks its the one that comes on Windows 2000). That night I made 2 bootup disks, installed Norton Ghost (that I had sitting brand new in its box for about 4 months),made about 5 back up Cd's of files from my computer and ran all my Norton doctor/diagnose programs. The tech also suggested that it may be a good idea to copy important files to my D drive as backup. I thought I was safe from crashing hard since I had System Restore (its gotten me out of a bind many times in the past)so I didnt bother to make a bootup floppy, back up my data or install Norton Ghost but its like they say it could happen when you least expect it. I didnt loose any data just some Andrew Jacksons.
