Hi peeps
I just bought a new compter about 2 months ago and I have used system recovery about 5 times already. I am not that good with the tech part of a computer just the fun stuff. Well I have a HP Pavilion custume built it's a Pent III 192.o mb ram has 46 gb well since I first hooked it up it does nothing but freeze up/lock up on me and it sucks. I mostly use it for AOL which is where it happens the most but it also happens when not on it too. I use my computer mostly for music I keep roughly about 3000 wavs on it at a time and always messing with music audio programs. Well I called HP tech support and basically nothing came good of it except a phone number of a single chick lol. everytime I called they had me do a whole bunch of s--- like take this and that out of start up to free up memory or space I have no idea but right now my resources say I have 54 % but I also use that Memory turbo thing and that helps a bit. Right now my computer is free of all programs except the basic ones that came with ME and aol I do have a game called SWAT3 that I play online with others and it runs fine but after a few games it will lock up again. HP says that ME is having problems and I should use 98 which I have on my old computer that works fine. they told me to buy it I was like I just spent 2 thousand and change on this computer and I have to buy another OS? Yeah I cursed him out lol. Well basically I am at the point where I am gonna stick my head in the monitor and just die cause I don't know what else to do. I hear do this and do that but nothing seems to help all I know is I have a very fast computer with a lot of kool things but not for long cause it freezes. also I would like to know how to erase my whole HD and not just formatt it. Will that help? Selling computer anyone interested? lol.....thanks for any help............UNIT287wavs@aol.com best wav maker on the net :o)check out my web site http://unit287wavs.homestead.com/unit287s_wav_request_page.html

beat the computer and format the wife.
if you already have 98 ,why buy it again.
98 is much better with the hp. if you decide to format ,get all your drivers / links /download sites. saved on floppy .
copy the bookmarks ,drivers that will fit etc.
if I was awake I'd be more help. then again if I was awake I'd be beating my wife (with a banana)
:)

Windows ME has a problem with Hybernation. It causes computers to lock. It is also very bad at handing programs loading into virtual memory at startup.
In order to reduce lockups, Go into the BIOS and Disable Power Management (APM)
KEEP WINDOWS START UP CLEAR! In MSCONFIG, click on Startup. Remove all checks except any of the following: Ms Wheel, Primax 3d Mouse, Ensoniq Mixer, MultiFunction Keyboard, Scanregistry, Still Image Monitor, HPLamp, any file that starts with PP or HP, Goback Polling Service, and StateMgr.
Additionally, There is an issue with AOL and ME. To resolve that issue go to http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q272/0/16.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0 and download and install the the patch: 272016usam.exe. The only other way to resolve the issue is to spend the 40-80 and purchase a hardware modem and get rid of the Win Modem in your system. Just makes sure there are ME drivers for it.
I can understand your frustration, but there is a big difference between hardware and software. It doesn't matter who you bought the computer from HP, Dell, Gateway, Compaq etc. The problem is with ME. The manufacturers did not know there were problems with ME until it hit the market and the phones started ringing in the Tech Centers. So you can thank B. Gates and Microsoft for your problems. If you Format the drive and put Win98 on the system, your will work fine.

I'm having similar problems to Walt. MSConfig is squeeky clean. Tiny provided a floppy disk, to so say correct the ACPI Error Code 22 problem in Sys Info - IT'S MADE MATTERS WORSE!
How can I disable power management in the BIOS please?
In safe mode, should there be 4 x PCI IRQ Steering, and 2 x Universal Host Controllers, VIA TECH 3038 PC1 2USB?
The blue screen error is showing itself as PGCPC(01)+000AC55 Error: OE: 0028 C0079FFD and on trying to open Word 2000, Error Code OD:0246 015747FB.
You certainly seem to know what you're talking about, so hoping you can help me.

Does anyone have a HP that runs WinME well?
I have not herd of anyone so I would suggest installing WIN98se or continue posting.

I really appreciate all the help you guys gave in fact it was more then HP gave me. for the guy that said if I have 98 why not just install it on my computer I would but it came with my other computer my Aptiva which I h=gave my kids (Ganne switch computers when there sleeping lol) so i can use that. Now to the guy that told me to take out those things from my startup menu if you can can you email me so I can send you a list of what is in that start up menu so you can show me what to take out and what to leave? and also I am gonna try that bios thing just not on friday when I am having a few cold bud or I will fry my bios lmao it's god to laugh at the situation :o), hey I never considered formatting the wife hmmmmmmm have to try it!!
If all else fails I think I am just gonna buy windows 98 but the good thing about wimdows ME is that it came with so many nice programs like my cd burner program, music match and so many kool things I am not sure if 98 comes with those at least my old version of 98 didn't. If anyone wants to email me with some help I would surely appreciate it :o)......thanks.......Walt

Caroline:
When did you use the Disk? Did you try System Restore to go back before you used the floppy?
To get into the BIOS. Depending on your BIOS it is usually F1 or the Delete key. You must hit the appropriate key as the system is booting. When it boots up pay attention to the text. It will usuallly say "To Enter Setup Press . Once in the BIOS, only the keyboard works so you must navigate with your arrow keys. The Power Management Settings are either under the Power or Advanced Headings of the BIOS SETUP UTILITY. As you are not familiar with the BIOS -- DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING BUT POWER MANAGEMENT. It will be ENABLED, just change it to DISABLED and press (usually) F10 to exit saving changes. If you make a mistake.....exit discarding changes (usually ESC) and try again.
The information you are referring to in Safe Mode is dependant upon the motherboard. Some MBD's have 2 Universal Host Controllers so that is not abnormal. Do not worry about entries in the Device Mgr. unless they have a green or yellow exclaimation point or Question mark on them.
When is the first blue screen of death coming up. At boot? Can you get into windows normally? Or can you only boot to safe mode?
The Blue Screen that is coming up with Word indicates you have a Display Problem. Either extra monitor drivers or damaged video drivers.

Walt:
Take out EVERYTHING but what I listed. If something stops working (unlikely) let me know. It can be reversed.
The software you listed cd burner program, music match and probably most of your other cool stuff DID NOT come with ME. They are probably on the disks that came with you're computer and can be installed on Win98.
Wise decision: Not looking to fry your mbd, that is. Otherwise you will only be able to sell it as a door stop :-)

Many, many thanks for your help. It is not actually my system in question - I'm not so daft - I'm using Win98SE!
This is a PC I'm monitoring from afar as my friend is new to PC's. From what I can gather, windows is booting in, but with the blue screen of death. Through going into various messages in the forum, I've now got her to disable DMA, and at the moment, I believe, everything seems to be running OK - time will tell.
With respect to System Restore, this got us knowhere prior, reason for re-format and re-install. The new Tiny set up is not that good, only minimal disks with a bulk set up! It was my friend who spoke to Tiny on my advice, re. the ACPI Error Code 22 and after them identifying the number of her motherboard, they supplied her with this floppy. I got her to put the floppy in and go into Windows Explorer, but wasn't able to identify the files on the disk.
Once we re-formatted/re-installed and tweaked msconfig, everything was running fine, with only the ACPI Error Code 22 in System Information. I assumed that the Tiny floppy would update any drivers necessary as she purchased the PC only 2 weeks after the launch of WinME. I have yet to get a response from Tiny.
Anyway, after disabling DMA, I've received an email from her today to say that the blue screens have disappeared. I will keep you updated. But once again, many thanks for your assistance.

MR Gateway tech you are a wiseman Grasshopper lol. Well here is what I did so far.........I went and paid ( bucks for a diognostic program called "Tufftest" ran it and everything passed with flying colors so it's good to know it's not my computer. I think lol.....I also turned off that program called "Restore" cause I here it runs in the background so I figured I might as well turn it off I don't need it if I screw up anything I just use the recovery disk that came with my computer I don't keep much stuff on here anyway I keep it on cd and zip disk. Anyway I ran this cpu test and it said my cpu is hot I called HP and they said windows ME does that and it's a false reading.......I don't know.........lets see what else...OK about disabling those things in the start up menu.......I tech from HP did that with me one day and told me to leave some of them in cause they are my windows programs and it won't work without them. I have a lot in there too I took out a few like aol tray and my zip program and a few other program ones but I am not sure of the rest can I send you a list of the ones in there and you can let me know which is ok to take out and leave? Huh? Huh? Huh? lol...don't mind me long day at work lol........well thanks MR Gateway tech.............Walt

Walt:
Windows Me is not is not going to make the system hot...Regardless of what anyone says. It's just an operating system. -- SOFTWARE. "Tufftest"? I have never heard of it?
If HP feels as though their hardware overheats BECAUSE of a software package, they screwed you by selling you hardware that does not work with the software they also sold you. That would be like a car dealership selling you a car with transmission fluid in the crankcase. I am not Laugh

Additionally, System Restore is not going to show up in START UP AS System Restore. If you find ANYTHIHNG ( proof of coures, provided) called SYSTEM RESTORE in the start up....I will pay you money....because the Sysem Restore feature in MSCOONFIG is called *StateMgr. I Know. That is why I get paid the big bucks to fix computers like yours. And if your computer was fixed and I am wrong....you would not be posting on this site....LOL.
I told you to do to resolve your issue.Do as I suggested.....if somehiing ELSE does not work, AFTER doing what I suggested...than let me know. If you want to email me with a list of what is in your startup.....then you will have to pay for it. And in case you didn't know, Gateway charges $1.95 PER MINUTE for all issues outside of warranty. And as far as I am concerned, you are outside of warranty, because you own an HP...not a Gateway. If you don't the want the free advice I gave you and/or you don't want to pay $1.95 per minute....CALL HP. Let them fix it.

At the risk of repeating myself..... :-)
Sorry, everyone....I don't know how I managed this blunder!
My confirmation button must be sticking!!

Caroline
You did the right thing. If your friend could not get to Windows (Normal Mode) and System Restore didn't work....I was going to tell you that it would probably be easier to Format and Reload.
Your quite welcome, Caroline. It was my pleasure.

Gateway Tech
No problems at all now reporting on the ME machine!
I've got one for you though, I'm running a 500mhz PIII 128RAM Win98SE. As I'm a web designer, I use resource heavy graphics software. Over the last few days, typically whilst using Microsoft Home Publishing, I've had freezes (which is quite normal, as they've been hefty graphics). However, when doing Ctrl-Alt-Del there is a Common32.dll showing - can you shed any light on this one, as I haven't come across this one before. Many thanks in advance.
Caroline

Caroline
Cmmon32.dll is a Windows 98 Cab file. If you think that this is what is causing your system to lock, just extract it from your the WIN98 directory of your Windows CD and save it to C:\windows\system. It is possible that cmmon32.dll is corrupt. Extracting it will replace the corrupt file with a clean one.

Many thanks, will try it. I did a search in Win Explorer and the only Cmmon32.* file found on PC was an exe. The properties say its Connection Manager. This program shows also in my add/remove programs in Control Panel. Do you think this could be a IE5.5 add on, and if so, do you think it would be safe to uninstall it?
Caroline

I have the exact same problems as our friend Walt. The only difference is my computer isnt as good as far as hardware: Celeron 733, 64mb, 30gb. The first time i started it up it crashed and froze and that was the start of a hellish relationship.
