When attempting to print from IE I get this message- “An error has occurred in the script on this page/ line 220/ Char 1/ Error In compatible version of RPC Stub/ Code 0/ url res:// c:\windows\system\SHDOCLC/preview.dlg”
I work around lack of printing by copying and pasting to word; all other programs are printing normally.
I am also unable to download from “windows update” but I can from other areas of Microsoft.com. Otherwise the PC is running well.
This problem was posted as "ME expert wanted" a few days ago.Following the advice from CrazyOne I downloaded windows script 5.6 and I was able to print normally from IE. But...the next time I re-booted the PC it failed to start up.
I had an error during start up...error 06 0000 00000017. Then I had a dialogue box which said "msgsrv32 has caused an error in KRN386.exe/ msgsrv32 will now close/ If you continue to experience problems try restarting your computer/" As I was unable to start the computer I went for the ultimate solution and re-formatted and re-install all software. Throughout the re-install I could print from IE then for no obvious reason the problem returned.I would welcome any suggestions, particularly from CrazyOne.

Log in in safe mode go to satrt menu run type msconfig click startup tab and see what boxes are ticked.Untick them all one by one and inbetween each time u untick one restart pc and see if prob is still there.I only have loadpowerprofile ticked on mine no real need for anything else oh all bar anything to do with your antivirus.

Thank you for that.
I've tried it, but no success. In the safe mode it seems that nothing starts up but I still get the same error message when I try to print from IE. I tried removing each program progressively and restarting in normal mode. With nothing but Norton running I get the same error on printing.
It almost seems to me that something has been modified at some stage and I will continue to get this problem until I change it back.
I have seen a solution to this error for Windows 98. It involved replacing dispex.dll with another version. But the dll files cannot be replaced in ME because of file protection.
Is it possible to change system files in ME?GlynM

The problem is solved!
I downloaded a different version of dispex from DllDump. I started in safe mode and ME accepted the change of protected file. Immediately I was able to print from IE.
Before I started this substitution I had un-installed all the minor software I had loaded during the past few weeks hoping that the problem would go away with them. While I was re-installing the software for a USB flash drive the problem returned! Clearly the incorrect version of dispex (and maybe other files) was introduced by this software. To be on the safe side I have reloaded windows (without re-formatting) and returned the flash drive to Serif.
Many thanks for the advice.
