For some reason every time I log on to aol it gets to step 5 then stops and starts over from step one, dialing a different # of course. Though the 2nd time it always goes thru. I called aol they said it was a problem with Me, I said it sounded more like a server problem. Anyone run into this problem?

Howdy, I don't use AOL just for these types of reasons and that I am also not a novice user but not all novice users use AOL so I retract that statement. Anyways, what Ver. of AOL are you using? When did the problem start? I don't use AOL but have fixed many of its problems. Mainly telling folks to get another ISP/Online Service

Problems Connecting to AOL or Shutting Down Your Computer After You Use AOL with Windows Millennium Edition

from the microsoft KB:
RESOLUTION
According to AOL, the current workaround for this behavior is to install AOL version 6. Microsoft believes that this issue occurs because there is an error in the AOL 5 code. To date, no fix is posted by AOL.

if you want to keep AOL 5.0 there is a fix posted on microsoft that works for about 40% of the folks:
Cannot Stay Connected Using America Online (AOL) with Windows Driver Model (WDM) Modem

but upgrading to 6.0 is probably the best option.

First off, AOL likes to blame Microsoft, but trust me, IT'S AN AOL PROBLEM. The current fix listed is to upgrade to AOL 6.0, but AOL 6.0 is NOT a fix for this. I have personally upgraded to 6.0 this week. It ran fine for about 5 log-ons then began the "two times to log on" routine and the shut down problems just like w/ version 5.0. Guess we still need to wait it out.

No, I haven't because Microsoft has this on their site.
MORE INFORMATION

Note that this issue is not resolved if you apply the hotfix from the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
article:

Q272016 Cannot Stay Connected Using AOL with WDM Modem

Are you saying that in fact it MAY work for some people?

Dave...if you need this hotfix, I can email it to you. And it REALLY does work for some people...although not everyone. As far as who did what to what to cause what...AOL's code has been around for years. Microsoft has supported all versions of AOL in each developing Windows Build until now. Microsoft issued the fix...the problem is with WDM Drivers and simultaneous inputs with Winmodems...which has always been supported. AOL 5.0 didn't change between Windows 98 and Windows Me...Windows did. Who did what to cause what???

Anyway, Jonathan, newgrl has you on the right track...just in case you're still fighting with this issue.

yes... that's what i'm saying... try the patch. no guarntees, but it definately won't hurt anything. be sure to create a manual restore point before applying the patch. that way, if it messes with your system, you can just go back in time.

and i couldn't find that quote... what i did find is:

on this point Moiety you're wrong. AOL corrupts the winsock2 keys. as a matter of fact, the fix for most folks that are having trouble browsing with AOL/Compuserve is to delete the winsock2 key from the registry, uninstall DUN, reinstall DUN and let Windows rebuild the registry...

yes... Microsoft is trying to take over the world, but so is AOL. the battle has been going on for a long time. and AOL has never worked properly for everyone using any windows product...

pick a different battle, eh?... this one's a lost cause.

MWin... thank you. i didn't see that. and i have seen the hotfix work for some people. hrmmmmm.?

newgrl,

I too have seen the hotfix work...and it even worked for me, but with a slightly different problem. As I said before, the sure way around this issue until the modem manufacturers, Microsoft, and AOL/CS get things worked out, is to go with a hardware modem instead of a Winmodem.

You are also correct about the winsock2 thing...Also, the new versions of AOL/CS try even harder to establish a supertunnel when connecting, which also adds to the equation. This is especially true if you are running personal firewalls such as Zone Alarm, or BlackIce Defender. Keep in mind that AOL/CS were not compatable with Microsoft's Dial up Networking until now, not to mention the fact that Me uses the same TCP/IP stack found with Windows 2000. Add all of this up...what did you come up with? One big mess...:) Then we get to do this all over again around the end of next year!

When I was using version 5.0 (preinstalled on my new system) it worked fine for a while, then began with the two-try dial up and hanging-shut down. The same happened when I upgraded to 6.0. It worked fine for awhile, then it started up.

All of a sudden (in the past two days), it's working fine again. Is this a problem that can come and go?

i'm answering my own question here- yes, it can come and go with version 6.0, but infrequently. since i posted above, it's only screwed up once.

Well, at least i know its not just me thats having this problem. The EXACT same thing happens to me. When i sign onto AOL 5.0, no matter what number i dial, it always gets to the last step and hangs for awhile, then disconnects. It always connects on the 2nd try. This is mildly INCONVENIENT to say the least because it now takes about 4 minutes to sign on. I will say that i never noticed this problem using AOL 5.0 on other computers running earlier operating systems. I just got a new HP Pavilion XL754 with Win ME. I would NOT UPGRADE to AOL 6.0 tho, as there are many problems with it still. I know somebody that finally got AOL to admit that there was a problem with it running sloooooooowwww and told him to uninstall it and keep using 5.0. Both AOL and Microsoft are notorious for releasing software full of bugs and glitches and are essentially BETAS that you pay for.

i had the same problem connecting to AOL from windows ME (no problems with other windows operating systems that i have on other computers). The problem was resolved by AOL on line technical support. I just had to rename an AOL file (i am not saying that the problems was caused by AOL, AOL helped to resolve it). I will try to find the details and post them when i find them.
