Me cannot recognize video driver...

OS: Windows Me, 4.90.3000
CPU/Ram: Pentium 90mhz / 16mb
Comment:

I installed Windows Me, using the "Micro" feature of 98 lite.

Runs nice and fast, but it doesn't recognize the video card driver.

Video card is an S3, think 864 or something, IBM PC.

IBM has only drivers for NT, and Win 3,1. The 3.1 driver gives me a refresh rate of 43hz, which is totally unacceptable (pain on my eyes)

Windows 95 and Windows 98, and 98 SE have the driver built in, and I never had a problem with those OS on this machine. But, I really want Me on this, and I want more than 640x480 16 colors, especially considering we are watching this on a 20 inch monitor!!!!

Windows ME also has drivers built in for that adapter. You need to check in the BIOS Setup and see how much RAM is allocated to the video adapter. If only one or two MB, bump it up so you can do better than 640x480x16. Hum.. actually your processor is too slow to run Windows ME very well and you need more than 16MB to run Windows ME, so changing the memory mapped to the video card might just keep Windows ME from running at all.

Hi 900t.

Maybe the Windows 98SE driver has a "version" file in it which checks what version of the OS you are trying to install on.

Copy the S3 864 Windows 98SE video setup files to a folder on your desktop. (Download from DriverGuide if you don't have them on disk.) See if there is a file in there called "version" and rename it version.xxx.

Then run setup.

This works on getting Soundblaster Audigy drivers to work in DOS on ME so maybe the same technique will fool the S3 video setup program into installing into Windows ME.

Take care,

Linda

Hi again.

The exact file you need to rename may not be called "version" but something similar like "OSversion" or "checkversion".

Look through the files to see if any of the file names looks like it tells the setup program to check the version of Windows it is installing on and rename that one before running setup of the video driver.

Take care,

Linda
