I was running Second Chance (Power Quest) on Win 98 when I installed ME. I got the pop-up during installation to turn off Second Chance, that it might create a problem. I did at the time.

I'm not really happy with the MS restore. Is it ok to use Second Chance if you deactivate MS Restore? Is anybody here doing that? I couldn't find any info at the Power Quest. I may e-mail them but I would also be interested in the experiences of anyone who has actually tried it.

I am using GoBack with no problems so far. GoBack is a much better choice than MS system restore. Don't know too much about second chance.

Ray,

just a quick question,
Why are you unhappy with M$ System restore?
It seems to have worked fine with me, i make restore points before every major inastallation and have used it with aggression quite successfully.
Are you just more at ease with the other software?.

I also use second chance on a win 98 platform and I also was thinking of installing Win ME. I contacted the Powerquest people and they told me that "so Far" second chance is not supported in ME. However I have posed this question on other forums and a number of people told me that they were running second chance on Win ME with no problems. Try it!

(Sorry about the misspelling in the title {G})

The reasons why I prefer Second Chance include:

I can set what time and how often it automatically makes a back up.

If I need to make a back up it's setting in the quick launch tray. Yes, there are work-arounds to make MS Restore quicker to access but you still have more screens to do a simple thing that can be done with one click on the first screen of Second Chance.

I can selectively remove checkpoints to increase space on hard drive.

Second chance allows me to back up more things and offers more selectivity after restore. It gives me a screen that shows all files affected by the restore and the option to change them to before restore.

Number one reason though that caused me to post was my attempt to use MS Restore. It had made only 3 backups in 7 days. The nearest check point was two days in the past. The checkpoint couldn't be restored to according to the message after the attempt. No explanation given. The next two going back much further yielded the same message.

Ray-

If I am correct, System Restore is set by default to take a snap shot of your system every 10 hours of your computer use. Even if the system has been shut off before the 10 hour mark, it will continue where it left off. You can set System Restore to take up less of your HD space if that is a concern as well. I think the lowest it goes is 200MB. I also believe there is a way to have System Restore take snap shots sooner than the 10 hour time frame that is set by default.

Hope this helps and good luck.

That makes a lot of sense. You're going to run Windows 98 (an earlier version of Windows) so that you can create restore points with one click.

First of all, Win ME has a lot more options to save you time. Take the extra 8 seconds and use MS Restore - It has worked fine for me

Second, when a software is not supported on a platform, it doesn't mean it doesn't work on it. It means it's not supported... as in no technical support. Try Second Chance on Win ME, if it doesn't work fine, just hope you created a restore point using MS Restore!

Thanks every one for your response. As to MS Restore making a copy every 10 hour, as I said that wasn't the case for me. It may have been an anomaly. I'll let it run a bit longer to see.

Yes, you can control the amount of disk space MS restore uses but it's a very rudimentary control. With Second Chance if your computer is running well you can just go in and selectively clear out unneeded restore points. Also you can remove restore points that would take you to a time when you had a problem.

All and all I just think Second Chance is a lot better program with a lot more features....but that’s just my opinion.

I had very little idea of what second chance could do the first time I read about it, but since then I have read many reviews and GOBack is the better product. You never have to make restore points. If you're computer is idle for a minute that automatically becomes a restore point. The program is hands free until you need to restore, and it is very simple. you can have many many restore points for a single day on GOBack. Check out some reviews and see for yourself. GoBack has saved my AXX many of times. BUT if you are used to Second Chance and you like how it works why not continue to use it. The first thing I did after installing ME was knock out sys restore. Why even give it a chance when I have a proven better product? Just my thoughts for good, or for bad.
