Subject: ME and AcerScan Prisa 320P |
Comment: After upgrading to Windows ME, I went to the Acer sight and downloaded the appropriate driver for my Acer Prisa 320P scanner. It doesn't work properly now! It won't work with Adobe, Picture Publisher, Jasc Paint Shop Pro or Ulead. It will work with Kodak Imaging though, which I find strange. When I look in my device manager under imaging devices, it is listed as a 320U!! It should say 320P??? I have a parallel port!! Not a USB port!! No matter how I try to install, with the cd, with add/remove programs, with add new hardware, nothing works. When I put in the cd, it only shows files for 320U products. Can anyone help me with this? I certainly would appreciate it. I'm running out of ideas. Thanks in advance, Judy :(

Reply: (edit)I had the same trouble with a UMAX 2000P scanner, after searching for answers I found that the only answer is to buy another scanner [USB connection] and verify before buying that it will install with Windows Me

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the reply Mike....but isn't there some other way?? Shouldn't Acer offer a patch, or is it Microsoft's fault? I shouldn't have to purchase another scanner...mine isn't even a year old yet!! Does anyone else have any ideas?? Still not scanning, Judy :(

Reply: (edit)I have a Umax 2000P, I had with w98se and have now with Windows Me, and it works the same and great, I have had no problems what so ever I just hope that if this brakes I can find another parallel port scanner, there seems to be more of a problem with the usb ones. Keep checking for drivers Judy, and if you found them and they don't work email support from Acer on your problem they probably can tell you exactely what the problem is. Sue

Reply: (edit)Thanks Sue. I have emailed Tech support for Acer. I've also been on hold with their support phone line for 2 hours and 20 minutes, twice!! Two different days, only to be cut off and another weekend approaches. I've emailed and emailed, I've left voice messages on their system, they have emailed me back, twice, and assured me that someone would phone me. They've asked me for my home phone number and said someone would definitely call me back. I'm still waiting. It's been three weeks or better. It seems their support is avoiding me, and I believe the issue here is that they don't have a driver that will work, although they have a download link for ME and my scanner. I know there is a problem because now that I have ME, when I insert the CD for Mirascan to install, it only shows files with the letter U after the numbers. I'm so frustrated!! I hate to think they are just toying with me, I really don't think they have a driver that will work and this is probably why they're not getting back to me. Very Frustrated, Judy :(

Reply: (edit)Sorry to here that, their is nothing more annoying then being ignored, hang in there, if I were you I would send them an email twice a day over and over, until they listen. I hate that, I had that with Norton's they made me so mad when I would email a problem or question to them they would email me about 10 pages of garbage so I would read thru it and nothing would even pertain to what I was asking. But I had good instructions and emailed them for help and it took them one day and they emailed me back with further instruction, have to admit they were great. Sue Some times, like with my scanner when I installed it with Windows Me, If you do not go exactely with the instructions it hangs up, I had to Install Program (Adobe Photo Deluxe) 1st, then all the bundled software, Presto, page manager, photo album, presto page type, omni page le and online manuals, the the hardware ( the scanner plugs itself .......when I installed this step the hardware (I had to disconnect the printer like pretend I did not have one, and after it set up the drivers and stuff and worked then I pluged in the printer into the back of the scanner, I could not get it to work with the printer pluged in at all, untill I ran a test and rebooted (strange but it worked that way, but not the other way. Sue

Reply: (edit)Thanks for your response Sue. I keep coming back here to check. Sure is nice to know there's someone out there that's been through similar situations....I'm not alone! :) Yes, I've emailed them again today...told them my scanner is still under warranty, which it is, and if they can't provide a fix for it, then I think they should have to replace it...it should have been made compatible to work with ME. Guess what? They got back to me!! Just an automated response, but that's a start. I've emailed them again, with my "ten thousand" emails I've previously sent to them, all attached, and the message marked high priority. I'm waiting to hear from them. But do you know what bugs me? I thought that most new hardware "now-a-days" was mostly PNP.....what happened to that concept??? Sometimes installations are sooooo complicated. They shouldn't be. :( It installed so easily with Win98, no hitches at all. And I do love my ME....don't misunderstand me....I do want this to work. Sounds like you went through so much to get your scanner to install. It shouldn't be so difficult!! I'm not a technician, just a plain old "at-home-user." Still with high hopes, Judy :)

Reply: (edit)I thought I should bring everyone interested up to date. I talked to tech support today on the phone...all the way out to California! The guy was very helpful and apologetic for the lack of support I had received. Some mix-up as to why my messages hadn't been delivered to him until yesterday. He coached me through every procedure possible, into the bios, and the registry, we did everything and tried everything. No way, acer 320P will not be recognized under ME. That's it,thats all. It installs under Other Device in device manager. He said ME doesn't recognize it. He said ME works better with USB port scanners, guess you were right Mike. He suggested, because mine is still under warranty, to send it for repair, but he said there probably isn't anything wrong with it. He also suggested to see if I could return it to where I had bought it, seeing as it still was under warranty. So I phoned the computer shop where I had purchased it....they want me to bring it and my tower in....we're talking 35 miles away! I've been through this before and I hate being without my computer. I told the guys at the computer shop that I had in fact spoken with the head honcho at Acer in California, and it won't work! They want to "try a few things"...I asked what? As it turns out, it's things I've already tried! This is just getting more frustrating by the moment. Looks like I may have to buy a new scanner....there's nothing wrong with the one I have! At least I know, I've tried everything possible, but defeat wasn't in my plans. Thanks to all of you for your help and support. And if you're planning to purchase a scanner and you have ME, may I suggest a USB port scanner? It will save you a lot of headaches. Happy Scanning, Judy :)

Reply: (edit)Judy, I think I would take it back and get money back, you have a good claim, if you look up http://www.acercm.com.tw/global/service/scan/drivers.htm (bottom page) on Acer Web page they claim that your 320P does work with Windows Me, so that is false if it does not, you should not have to pay for another scanner, stick to your guns, tell them you would not have upgraded to me if it did not have drivers that are suppose to work....I know its a pain, but at least you may not have to pay for another one. Try it? Good luck. Sue

Reply: (edit)Thanks Sue, I'll let you know how I make out. But you're right about the Acer page with the driver for my scanner and ME, they advertise it as working with ME...but I know differently. The guys at the computer shop where I bought the scanner say I have to take it up with Acer. I've emailed them, but haven't heard anything back yet. Still waiting for a reply, Judy :(
