Hi All,

(HMM, I TRY TO POST THIS IN 95/98, BUT SAYS OS MISMATCH. I AM USING 98SE AND IT APPROVES POSTING IN ME FORUM!!!)

I have finally but reluctantly upgraded my machine to Windows 98, but I must say that now I don't regret it. Windows 95 is loaded with security holes if it is used as a Internet machine.

Anyway, the website with my manufacturers specs says that the max RAM for my serial number is 256MB. What would happen if I attempted 512MB. It is a PC66 manufactured 10/14/97 and I am not sure if that is REALLY the limit or if that was just the maximum RAM available way back in '97. This computer has served me wonderfully through the years, and currently 256MB is enough, but just wondering. It is a "legacy machine" in like-new condition and I will use it until it dies.

Thanks!

Stephen Fox

Sometimes when you add ram to older units it will Decrease in performance
You may need to flash/upgrade the Bios. and myself wouldnt suggest it for a old p66mhz
I would say the 256 ram would be at the very Max
As street1 says try crutial.com

" It'll Get Ya When You Aint Lookin "

Please Post back to let us know if we helped

I agree with street. Go to crucial and see the requirements/limitations for your system.

Personally, I would dump AOL & get a *real* ISP that doesn't bog down the system with a bunch of useless crap, & dump RealPlayer as it's known to open the door to spyware/infection. If you feel you need it, use the Alternative version which is spyware free.

Hello everyone,

Stephen Fox,

256MB of RAM on Win98 is usually more than enough for most users. I was unable to find your Gateway model number, P55C-166 GW2K HAMPTON on the Gateway website or on Crusial.com.

I would be much more concerned with the following in your system specs;

DiskDrive1=HardDiskDrive
C: FreeSpace: 241 MB
TotalSpace: 1537 MB
.

Best Regards,
Mesich

To All,

I appreciate the info. The 241MB HD is only running the apps. The D: holds all my information.

Jam, I have had AOL since '94 and I have to admit that it is indeed a nasty infection that I just can't part with. Look at the bright side: It AOL Broadband, which is a totally different animal than dial-up.

yea, I must admit I use AOL at one time myself, but I found a better dial-up service (Localnet) & used that for many years. It didn't require any software installed, plus it was only $99/year (unlimited). I've had DSL for a while now $15/month...you can't beat it

I would PM Justin Weber about your posting problem. I'm not sure how it works but it was to prevent the multitudes of misplaced posts in the W95/98 forum. Mainly they were from XP users who would appear to have some kind of mental block.

If you put in the correct entry under OS then there must be a problem on here that needs sorting out.
