I got an error when opening my control panel saying that 'There was an error with main.cpl'. Going to Windows support, they tell you have to extract a new file and replace it. Which I have done. Now, when I rebooted. it still gave me the same error. So then I renamed main.cpl -> main.old and then rebooted. The Control Panel Still opens up without it. I read what it's used for, but everything seems to be in working order. Any thoughts? Anyone?

win-me has an auto system file checker that replaces system files, so by renaming it,
windows probably auto replaced it.

www - the CPL files are not protected... just FYI.
Lawrence - the main.cpl controls your mouse properties. What kind of mouse do you have? Did you install extra software to use with your mouse? Does your mouse have it's own Control Panel applet?

I have a logitech mouse with its own software. So I guess it wouldn't make a difference there.
I don't think windows ME automatically replaces them, because in Microsoft KB docs you actually have to extract a .cpl file from the windows install disk to replace it. Also, I've rebooted and checked in the system folder for Main.cpl and it's not in there. so Windows won't automatically replace it. There are some files that windows will recreate if it's a needed file. so I figure Main.cpl must not be that important of a file.
Windows ME still seems to function fine without it.
