Apologies to everyone if I have overlooked a source, but I can't seem to find the information I am looking for. I run ME on a 1.4G P4 Dell with 512Meg of memory. I am showing 48% system resources. Obviously I have too much stuff loading. Where can I find out the definitions and explanations for the startup menu items so that I can delete all those that I absolutely don't need? Also, what are the absolute minimum items I need in the system configuration utility startup menu?

Explorer and Systray are the absolute minimum. System resources are measured from a pair of 64(KB) stacks and shared by all running applications.

Why are you concerned with 48% ?

Explorer is not an option in your Startup configuration.
Systray is not needed at all, unless you just want to see the speaker symbol in your tray.
the ONLY program which needs to run with certainty is the one called StateMgr. It controls the Restore function of ME. From there you may DESIRE to have an antivirus, your firewall, a cache manager, etc. Which if you have concerns about what your RAM is doing, install CacheMan. It will put an icon in your tray which reflects exactly what you have available, and will recover RAM which is not actually being used.

Thanks for the responses, especially EC for the URL. Great site. I am on my way to a fix (I hope). Ellis, everything was running too slow for me. Lots of lockups and crashes.

Thanks to all for the help.

Brant - I'll buy that. Generally a minimum (which is what he asked) it Explorer and Systray.

Ca-Hottie - 48% isn't bad... If you get to 30% and you're screwed - You've got other problems... At 30% you'd have to open an application that required more than that amount to get into trouble.

Had same problem for months- called tech for hp before warranty ran out-
this is what tech had me do- IT WORKS but you will prob. have to do it often. Many programs are set up to be put in this utility automatically :
START/RUN/ (type in) msconfig and pick ok.
You are now in SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY=
BE SURE "LOAD STARTUP GROUPITEMS" is checked on GENERAL PAGE.
Then, click on STARTUP.
The ones he told me to keep are:
--Keyboard manager
--Load Power Profile
--Adaptec Directcd (I don't think this is necessary-I often ctrl/alt/delete it)
--Statemgr
--StillmageMonitor
--STIMON
Stimon is because of camera and scanner setup-if you don't have these-you may not need these.
THAT'S IT!!! :)
I ck resources often and if it is showing low again I go to msconfig again. It has been such a relief to have this problem solved!!
DEPENDING UPON BROWSER- 48% can be very bad news!!
GOOD LUCK
