I have a system with 6Gb of HD memory and 256Mb of RAM, but whenever logging onto AOL or when saving a PC game, I get the message, "Not enough memory". What is wrong with my PC?

Hi,
I am no professional by far..but I have a lower memory and had that same problem it maybe due to the fact...the other programs running in the background of your computer...once I shut down some of these programs I was fine to run other programs without the memory error message....Might not be your problem but it was a simple problem that I had for a few months that like to ran me crazy...

Mel... how many icons do you see down by the clock? all of those programs start upon boot up and stay "turned on" while you are on the PC. they are called Terminate and stay Resident Programs because they are always in your system memory.
if you have more than... say 6 or 7... this could be your problem.
go to start>>run>>msconfig
go to the startup tab
take the check out of all the things you don't need.
leave:
Scan registry
systray
*statemgr
PCHealth
your virus scanner(if it is compatible with ME... if it is not... you may have other problems)
your firewall(if you have one)
click apply>>ok>>and reboot when prompted.if you are still having the problem after doing this... how much hard drive space do you have left?
to find out:
double click My Computer
right click on the c: drive and choose properties.
it will say how much space you have free.if your hard drive space is almost full, you will see these kinds of messages when Windows wants to use the swap file(space on your hard drive used for dynamic memory). If it cannot efficently use the swap file because of low disk space... clear some things off that you don't need and defrag the hard drive.
if that does not fix it... post back... we'll work some more.
