I wonder if someone could please tell me if my memory is low. I have a 40GB HDD and my system information reads:
total physical memory: 126.51MB
available physical memory: 40.69MB
total virtual memory: 2GB
available virtual memory: 1.87GB
page file space: 1.88GB

free space in c drive is 37.4GB

also %windir% and %root% are missing.

Thanks.

I'd upgrade your RAM to 256, just because ME runs better that way. If you could up it to 512, that would be even better.

What do you mean your Windows and Root folders are missing? If they were, your system wouldn't even boot....

Hi,

Thank you for responding. I don't know very much about computers, and I'm trying to learn. My computer seems to have a mind of it's own. I've had problems with it since I bought it years ago. It started with the network places icon was missing. Then the error messages started. "... has caused an error in ... ... will now close." There was a crunching sound whenever javascript was activated. It would freeze, and was extremely slow. I had low memory errors. I had BSOD's, and files missing. It started smoking, clicking, "wailing" and died. The last thing I saw was "fatal error: windows must be re-installed." I had someone look at it. He found that it had tried to rebuild another hard drive before it gave up and died. The CD/RW drive had burned out. I sent it off to be fixed. He put in a new hard drive and disconnected the CD/RW drive. He also suggested replacing the (case?) tall component that has the HDD in it. He wasn't sure if replacing the HDD would completely fix all the problems. I guess he was right because it's starting again. I try to fix the various error messages, missing files, etc. as they come up trying to prevent an inevitable crash.

I'd upgrade the memory if that was the only problem. Eventually I'll get a new (case?) or just buy a new system. Can you mix components from different brands? For example, a Compaq monitor with a Sony case (long, tall thing that contains the HDD.)? Or would that cause conflicts?

RE missing %windir% and %root% files. I unhide protected system files, show hidden files and folders. I search in find files and folders for "%windir%". It says there are no results to display. Same thing for "%root%". Maybe I'm not doing that right, but it used to work.

It's showing 128MB memory in CMOS BIOS system information. It shows 127MB in System Properties. It shows 126.51MB total physical memory in System Information. I guess this is another problem, or maybe I just don't understand it. Shouldn't they all be 128MB?

Thanks again for looking.
