Hi,
When using Paint Shop Pro and/or Front Page, I have been getting "you do not have enough memory to run this application. Please close other programs and try again". However, according to the information when checking the memory from DOS, it shows that I have 580K free, out of 640K.
I have nothing running in the background except scanregw., systray, explorer, and Statemgr. and AVG. I have tried changing the virtual memory settings, but am not sure if I put the right values in, because I still get the error.
I have been using these two programs for over a year without any problems, until three days ago. Since then, the low memory message appears every time I try to open either program. I have not downloaded any new programs, and check daily for spyware.
All caches have been emptied (temp, history, cookies, recent, PC Health, etc.) but still get the error.
I deleted and then re-installed both programs, but that didn't help, either.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks
Bluelightnin

Neither PaintShopPro nor Front Page are DOS applications, so the amount of free conventional memory is irrelevant.

Are you sure it's not a low system resources problem?

Try having the Windows Resource Meter (rsrcmtr.exe) running when you open the apps, and observe the values

A bad cause seldom fails to betray itself

The item that bothered me is the "scanregw" running under task manager. That program should NOT be running. It is the first program to run in the Startup list, but it quickly exit before most of the others are started. Sounds like there is either a problem with that program or a corrupted Registry.

Try running SCANREGW and see if it runs and pops up the message asking if you want to backup the Registry.

Thanks for the responses. Sorry it took me so long to get back with you.
Jboy, I ran System Monitor and here are the results. When running either program, or both together, system resources are around 84% free. With them running, and AVG, and I'm on a website, the system resources average around 70%. There is no big drop in resources when opening either program.

Jack G, I tried running SCANREGW, and got an error message saying that "Windows encountered an error accessing the registry. Windows will repair the registry for you and restart the computer". It doesn't give me any details as to what the error is. Is there a way to find out?

I've gotten this same message a couple times in the last few weeks when checking the Registry. I haven't noticed anything unusual when running any programs, other than Outlook Express is slow to load, and the low memory error in PSP. I think I fixed the Front Page error by reinstalling it. At least, it's working okay at the moment.
Thanks again for any other ideas ya might have. Appreciate it!
