Computer was operating fine until I loaded latest Microsoft Me updates. Now can't get past title splash page of Me. CAn't get started in safe mode, get keyboard failure message, but have tried another keyboard and both work the same way, so doubt faliure message. Tried to reinstall Me using reinstall disc recieved form Dell with computer, but nothing happens when I put it in the disc drive. Should I just get XP and overinstall or keep looking for solution?

xp would certainly be more stable but, if you do you should do a clean install versus an upgrade so if you intend to keep any data on your current pc you'll still need to get into it to back it up first. I didnt notice your hardware so also make sure your pc meets xp's hw requirements before buying it

does you machine have a floppy drive, and do you have a boot floppy, sometimes called an emergency boot disk.

If you do decide to troubleshoot this or reinstall ME instead of going with XP, the above post is correct in that you will need to first boot to a WinME (or Win98) boot disk/floppy first as WinME CD's are not bootable and cannot be installed that way.

Mike,
"...as WinME CD's are not bootable and cannot be installed that way."
That statement, isn't correct. Now, if you want to say; Not all WinME CD's are bootable. So that would mean, not all can be installed that way.
That, would a be correct/well-informed/truthful statement.
Just an Opinion,

You need to enter the BIOS settings and ensure that CD Drive is the first boot device.
btw what update did you try to install from windows update?,
MIKE this is a DELL, bootable or non-bootable ME CD is irrelevent.....they use restore disks.

luckily for me, I havent had to use ME since it's inception very much and at that time, MS ME OEM CD's were not bootable. If they are now, great.

What are these latest updates? I haven't seen any recently and though AutoUpdate is enabled nothing has destabilized my system.
Try booting from your WinMe StartUp disc and running a full Scandisk from there.

Stuart

Were these Microsoft updates, or web links to "speed up you computer" etc, or an e-mail from an unknown source that may have looked like Microsoft?
