An ME machine I am fixing has lost most of its file associations - including exe, reg, com and bat.
I could still open windows explorer however by right clicking the My Computer icon on the desktop and selecting 'explore'. After doing this I manually set up the reg association, then merged a couple of files I have to restore the exe and lnk associations. The icons now appear on items in the start menu, but when I click one of them the menu disappears without loading the program. Also if I right click the icons nothing happens - no menu at all. I can however run the programs by double clicking their exe in explorer. Is there any way of restoring all the default file associations and getting the right click menu to appear?
I found a bat file to do it for XP, but that doesnt work on ME.
Cheers

Have you tried rolling the registry back, to a known good state, and if that fails, a good restore point.

I have no idea when the problem started though, and also is it actually possible to revert to an old registry on ME? The computer still boots fine, so I would have thought that it overwrites its backup.

Martyn999,
"...so I would have thought that it overwrites its backup"
Yes, it overwrites one backup, with each successive backup made. It keeps five (5) registry backups, by default. Located here;
c:\windows\sysbckup

In windows, start, run, type; scanregw(leave a space)/restore Then select a good registry to restore. That's simplified but, if you work on computers, I think it will be clear to you, from there/then on.
You also could start the computer, with a start up disk (EBD). And use scanreg /restore at the prompt. Don't forget the space, between the 'g' and the '/'. Same goes for the 'w' and the '/', in the prior.

That, was why I mentioned system restore. If, if it's been a longer time, {seems odd, that it has been this way for a long time, and nothing was done to fix}, could use a restore point, to go back to a good place.
Try restoring the registry, to a prior time first. See if that helps.
Good luck
I'll Try
