I have Windows Me and a laptop and need an anti-virus suggestion. I don't do anything special on my home computer, but know I should have some protection from viruses. Any suggestions?

I used Norton's 2001 and it works just dandy.

Stay away from McAffee. I have had virii slip through with that one.

I use Norton 2001, and like it. It's very easy to configure and you can do a virus scan offline, something others I've used don't let you do. I have seen a lot of people complain about Norton's here, but I personally prefer it.

I have Norton 2002 and it does the job fine. But it can cause problems with Windows Update downloads. I have to disable it to make the Window Updates work. Also, when installing new software (especially drivers) I have found that it must be disabled.

Norton 2001 works fine - easily turned on and off from System Tray.

As Scott says, remember to turn off before doing Win.Update

Also try SwatIt from www.lockdown.com - free Trojan and Bot remover - Norton sometimes catches but can't clean.

Norton 2001 is fine. Also... disable it before you use "sys Restore". I learned that the hard way......

Keep meaning to get Norton back. For 20 Bucks, cheap insurance. Didn't have any complaints with it except their first version of Ghost. For now I use AVG and Panda and Housecall. All free. I can't remember which one is out of Europe, I think both Panda and AVG. But aside from being free, I thought they would give me a little more lead time because most viruses/trogans start in the east and migrate their way west. By the time you have your coffee, their on everyones computer. That was my logic anyway.
Not true, Panda I'm not sure but I think AVG is slow in updating their virus definations.
McAffee has had a bad rep. for quite a while but they just joined forces with someone. Can't remember who!
The impression I got was that their not out of the game yet. You won't catch it on any of my computers for at least a year or two.

Thats why i got systemworks brant....to give ghost a try. I was never infected while running norton but it was murder to uninstall, and the scans took twice as long.

With panda im using the install and forget version "Titanium". I never have to touch it. The only feature i miss from norton is the ability to right click a file and scan it. I sent panda an email about this but they havent replied :).

If you don't like the free stuff like AVG and want to pay for one I would reccomend going to Computer Associates and download their Etrust antivirus , if it's anything like their Inoculate IT PE then it's a great AV product and isn't nearly the resource hog Nortons is , i wouldn't touch nortons again . Had it on 2 different pc's it slowed them down something fierce . Couldn't do anything else while it was scanning either . I just had the new version on nortons put on my work laptop and now it's so slow it's unbelievable .

Have Norton AV along with it's Systemworks 2001 gathering dust - uninstalled the AV for reasons I can't remember now. Contented with the free AVG6.0.

Tried Innoculate It - conflicted with some software, also Panda and stayed with AVG6.
Different folks, different strokes.

International experts have no idea what my system looks like. They dont know who sends me email or what sites i visit. They have no idea what software im running and im sure they havent tried every possible software/harware configuration available. If they had they would know what a pain norton is to uninstall or atleast make it easy to upgrae there own product. This i think would limit there knowledge. I think i will stick to personal experience and what other users have to say until microsoft bundles an antivurs program in with the OS :).Monopoly! Woohoo...Free browser and media player.

Do you have a tendancy of hitting the nail on the head?

I'm at work, your going to get me in trouble.
This kind of comment either gives me a frown, because I agree, or makes me laugh, and my fellow workers who happen to drop by, think I don't have all my marbles.
BTW. your spelling is as bad as mine.

Yes my spelling is terrible. If you think its bad here you should see my handwriting since the keyboard and spellchecker took over. I think we have maybe one inkpen in the entire house.

Dont trust commercial-based computer magazine too much. You may look a little but not too much believe it, coz they do test, etc based on $$$$. I myself buy and read CHIP (German version which is the original one) regularly just for reference whats new in computing world, eg, hardwares, softwares, but for test i just trust no more than 50 %.
You know what, once they (CHIP and PCWELT) rated ZA below BleckICE!!! I dont believe it. BlackICE is a crappy fake firewall and ZA is really nice with no cost but they rated BlackICE more!! You see what i mean.
If you really wanna know the test from the credible site, try C't (www.heise.de---prominent german computer site), Tom's Hardware (www.tomshardware.com---if you wanna look the original german version, www.tomshardware.de)

For the best AV, in my opinion, your common sense is the best app. I deactivate my AV and just use it when i need and i never infected by any virus, worms, trojans, etc.
