I reformatted my HDD and replace Win 98 with Win ME. I have a few games by Hasbro that my kids love to play and will now not load on my PC because they say they are "Windows 95/98 programs". What files (if any) can I extract from Win 98 that would allow these games to load on my PC? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all in advance.

Bob

Many of those games have been distributed in cereal boxes. They are fun to play with your kids. You must install the game from your CD-ROM drive to C hard disk drive.Search your D drive for a Setup icon and click on it. Use the shortcuts created by the program to start it in Start/Programs. Leave the CD in drive and keep in mind that a game is seldom started from the CD-ROM drive. Windows ME isn't much different from Win 9X for games.

Maybe I was not clear enough before. These are purchased CD's produced by Hasbro. I tried to install them from my CD-ROM drive to my Hard Drive. The message: "This is a Windows 95/98 program" comes up and will not allow me to install the software/games. One of the games is "Battleship" for example. I want to install them on Windows ME. Any suggestions?

Bob

Right click on the Setup.exe file for you game and select Properties. Now click the Compatibility tab, and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME"

Now you can run the installer and it will not complain about it being the wrong OS.

My mistake, sorry. For some reason I was thinking of XP instead of ME.

Hi Bob.

I had an early release Star Trek game that would not install on Win Me.

This is how I got it to install.

Make a Folder with the name of the game you want to install such as "Battleship".

Copy the entire Battleship CD to that folder.

Open the folder and look for the file that sets up the game, such as "Setup.exe" or "Install.exe".

Note - This file may start up the menu that gives you the warning about needing Win 95 or 98.

In that case, see if there is another folder within the Battleship folder that you created that has another file called "Setup.exe" or "Install.exe".

Sometimes the Setup file that is in plain view only starts up the main menu while the actual Setup file that sets up the game itself is buried in another folder.

Also, some older games require a 256 color display or they won't work. Set your display to 256 colors if that is the case.

You would then return it to your normal color setting after playing the game.

Take care,

Linda
