Comment:

I have a hewlet packard running windows me, I started having problems with my dsl and the morons had me change settings that screwed everything up so i have norton go back and tried to go to before but it did not work so i decided to format the hard drive and start from scratch i used the recovery cd and it said hard drive could not be initialized , you may need t f disk well i opened the computer and made sure everything was plugged in tight all seemed ok, i did the f disk and ran the recovery cds they ran fine but on reboot i got a black screen that says load error! press any key to reboot, well when i do that i get the same message. when i did the f disk it did not ask me to type in the volume label and now that spot is blank and when i create the dos partition and it did not ask me to name it and i know that last time i had to do an fdisk i did have to name it. Any ideas?

I guess you mean that fdisk usually asks for the volume label to make sure you REALLY want to delete a drive/partition.

If it had no vol, you probably got by with [enter].

Did fdisk actually remove the existing partition?

And were you able to create a new one?

And did you run FORMAT C: to format the partition? FORMAT usually asks you for a partition name to insert. FDISK does not name partitions.

yes the partition was gone, I was able to see that. Format c? Exactly what would i do to do that? I thought that the recovery disk did that am I wrong? I usually do not mess with this kind of stuff on the computer so i know very little about it. How do I format drive c? Thanks for the responses.

use FREE version of KILLDISK http://www.killdisk.com/eraser.htm

to clear GoBack low level hook, Drive will now format with Partition Magic 8 or equal.

Sure works for me several times

An error about winders no longer suppoting forrmat /s means you've got mixed versions; or worse.

Get a garden variety 98se startup.

It has what's needed EXCEPT support for HD > 63GB.
