Comment:

Win ME, Celeron 1.1, 128 MB RAM
IE 6.0

When viewing many web pages all the graphics are blank boxes with little red x's in the upper left corner. If I select View->Encoding->Western European(Windows) then I can see the graphics fine. But when I select a link the option always goes back to Western European(ISO) and then I can't see any graphics.

When I select "auto-select" IE6 always chooses Western European(ISO) and then I can't see the graphics.

This all started after a WinME reinstall following my installation of a new motherboard.

help.

If the Web page does not include that information, and you have the Language Encoding Auto-Select feature enabled, Internet Explorer can usually determine the appropriate language encoding.
Verify that Show Pictures has not been disabled:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options .
Click the Advanced tab, and then verify that the Show Pictures check box is selected under Multimedia .

It could also be the result of broken links.

You can,in some cases,right-click the "lil' X" window and select "show pictures".But if they are broken links,"show picture probably won't do the trick.

You also might want to clear your IE cache and/or increas the size of that cache;
>Open Internet Explorer or click Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet options

With the Internet options dialog box open, in either of the options above, select the general tab
Under the header, " Temporary Internet Files", Select the settings button
Under amount of disk space to use move the slider slightly to the right or type in a new larger storage size in the space provided to the right of that. Try adding another 10 or 15 MB to start.
Click okay
Click okay
Restart the browser making sure that all instances are shut down
Try your webpage again.

Try refreshing the page.

And if you're on dial-up,this might be part of the problem....i.e.-slow connection speeds

This may not be an issue with Tod's query...but I will get the lttle red x on some sites if I have my ad-blocking enabled from my Norton Firewall. If I disable it then I can see them.

"Show Pictures" = checked.
I raised the side of my temp internet files from 80 to 146 MB.
I don't have Norton or any firewall.
I don't think it's my dial-up since with wasn't a problem before I re-installed WinME.
All these pages worked just fine before and they work just fine from my PC at work.

Any other ideas?

Hello Tod,
I recently had a similar problem and it turned out to be a corrupted registry entry for my Acrobat PDF Reader. A fresh installation fixed it.
Regards, Ray.

I un-installed and then re-installed Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 but still no luck.

The encoding option still switches back to Western European(ISO) and I get the boxes with little red x's.

Any other ideas.

One other thought Tod. Go to Control Panel\Internet Options - languages button, and check that the language is the appropriate one for you. While you are at it, you could also check out the Font and Language Script via the Fonts button.

Languages = "English(United States)[en-us]"

Language Script = Latin Based
Web Page Font = Times New Roman
Plain Text Font = Courier New

Are those right?

The x's are driving me crazy. I started using mozilla and it works fine. But I still want to be able to make IE work.

Thanks for the ideas Ray.
