I bought a Lexmark Z645 printer to use on our Windows ME PC. When it was our main PC, it was connected to a HP all-in one printer and it worked fine. When I try to install the Lexmark printer it freezes during installation. One time it actually did install and printed a document. But the next time I tried to use it, the PC froze and would not print again. I tried installing the printer on a W2K laptop and it worked fine. The drivers for Win ME are the same ones as 95/98 uses and I think that may be the problem. I tried Lexmark’s website (along with some other sites) for specific Win ME drivers and found none. I would appreciate any help that is offered. Thank You!

Ed In Texas, thanks for the suggestion. The Lexmark printer waas set as default. I later uninstalled the HP printer (because I thought it might help) so it is now the only listed printer.

I've also have the same problem with the Lexmark printer not working on windows me (I was running windows 2000 and it worked fine until it crashed)When I go to the device manager it shows that the thomson usb cdc device driver not loaded...and I've tried every site I could think of to find one...I even tried deleting it and letting the computer add new hardware...nothing...I am guessing that since this uses a usb port and there is not a valid usb port listed when I checked the ports (it's on the printer port 1)that this is my problem...it may be yours also...unfortunately if it is I don't have a solution yet!

I'm sorry that it took so long to reply. I plan to contact Lexmark customer service this week and see if they can help. I have had poor success with customer service for a variety of products when it involves Windows ME, so I usually try the forums first. If the fix is successful, I will try to post the details here. Thanks again for the help.

Did you install the software before connecting the printer?

Lexmarks are a pain to install correctly. I just recently installed a Lexmark X83 on a Windows 98SE and you had to have the printer disconnected from the computer before install, which is noted in the papers. Then when you hooked it up, the printer had to be turned off during installation. Either I just missed that last part from the start or wasn't aware. Any other way, and the software for the X83 just wouldn't configure correctly. Wish you luck in a solution!

To answer Jennifer's question. I followed the installation instructions. I connected the USB cable first, but clicked "cancel" when Windows started the "add new hardware wizard". Then I inserted the CD-ROM and left it install from there. I did, however, keep the printer turned on, as I have in previous printer installations. I will try installing it with the printer turned off. I will let you know if I have any luck.

Disconnect the printer and make sure all the drivers and references to the printer have been removed.
Then, insert the Cd and install the software; connecting the printer when told to do so.
