Current System:
ASUS P4B Motherboard
Pentium IV - 1.5Ghz
Windows ME
1024MB PC133 SDRAM
80GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
VERTO TNT M64 PCI Video Card
Sound Blaster Audigy +MP3
Norton System Works 2002Problem:
It seems that I want to run programs in Windows ME and I get a low-memory error. I get the "Blue screen of death" that does not give me the "Fatal exception" error, but it gives me the "System memory is low. Norton Anti-Virus may not function correctly". I have uninstalled Norton but the "System Memory is Low" error keeps popping up I have 1GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive! I know the support pages on Microsoft talk about Windows ME having trouble supporting RAM higher than 512MB. Does anyone else have this problem? I just wanted to make sure before I go out and maybe buy Windows XP with hopes to resolve this problem. Please help......:) Thanks...

Run MSCONFIG. In Advanced section, Limit RAM to 512 MB. If this cures your problem, remove half your ram.

When you have the amount of ram that you have (in excess of 512)Windows seems to slow down and you might try this "fix":
Add the following line to your system.ini - under the 386Enh heading:
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

If you want to run 1GB of RAM... run 2000 or XP Pro. They will handle the memory addressing just fine. The 9x platform will not. It is limited to 640k (yes... that's "k") of memory. All other memory addressing is handled by High Memory managers. It's not efficient, but that's how DOS was built. And the 9x platform runs on TOP of DOS. Besides... 1GB of RAM is just a waste on the 9x platform. It won't use it.
Two choices:
1. Pull out a couple of sticks of RAM, cutting it back to 512mb and run ME. You can also use this Q article as a guide to limit memory within the OS:
Out of Memory Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed (Q253912)
2. Buy a Pro OS. Either 2000 or XP Pro. Or, if you are plucky... Linux (any distro) will handle that amount just fine.
